The short answer

Replacing a lock is quick work and the labour ranges are below, with the lock bought separately. First, though, check it is the lock: if the key turns smoothly with the door open but fights you when it is closed, the problem is alignment and a new lock will not fix it. And if you have just moved in, change the main door lock regardless — you cannot know how many keys exist.

Jump to

People search for this in two situations: a lock that has started sticking, or the week they move into a new flat. Both are worth handling properly and the second is the one most people skip.

The thing worth knowing before you call anyone is that a difficult lock is often not a lock problem at all. If the key turns freely with the door open but fights you when it is closed, the lock is fine — the door has dropped or the frame has moved, and the latch is grinding against the strike plate. Replacing the lock leaves that entirely unfixed, and you get to do it again.

Is it actually the lock?

Two minutes of checking saves you buying the wrong fix.

  • Open the door and turn the key. Smooth with the door open but stiff when closed means alignment, not the lock. The latch is not meeting the strike plate cleanly.
  • Look for a shiny worn mark on the strike plate or the frame. That is the latch rubbing, and it tells you exactly where the misalignment is.
  • Check the hinge screws. A loose top hinge lets the door sag, and a sagging door throws off every lock on it. Tightening it is a two-minute job that solves a surprising number of “lock problems”.
  • Consider the season. A door that only binds during the monsoon has swollen with humidity and will free up by winter. Our door and lock care tips explain why you should not plane it now.
  • If the key itself is stiff in the cylinder, with the door open, then it genuinely is the lock — try a dry graphite lubricant before replacing. Never oil a lock cylinder; in Delhi dust it turns to paste.
Watch out a key that has become progressively harder to turn is giving you notice. Locks fail at the least convenient possible moment. Deal with it while the door still opens.

Moving in: change the locks

The one piece of advice on this page that is not about cost. When you take a new flat in Delhi, you have no idea how many keys exist to it — previous tenants, their families, a broker, a maid, a contractor, the landlord's spare that was lent to someone in 2019.

  • Change the main door lock in the first week. It is a small cost against the thing it addresses.
  • Discuss it with your landlord first. Most agree readily. Many rental agreements expect the landlord to hold a spare, so agree that and hand one over — doing it without a conversation is where disputes start.
  • Keep the old lock. You may need to refit it when you leave, and it is the landlord's property.
  • Check what else opens. The balcony door, the servant entrance, the terrace door, the grille gate. People change the front door and forget the others.
  • Keep a spare key outside the flat it opens. With a neighbour or family member, not under the mat.

Our moving-in tips cover the rest of the first week, and the tenant and landlord guide covers who pays for what.

Choosing a lock, and what to do if you are locked out

  • Take the old lock to the shop, or photograph it with a tape measure. Locks come in specific sizes — backset, spindle, cylinder length — and a mortise lock that does not match the existing cut-out means enlarging the mortise in the door. Match the size and the fitting is straightforward.
  • Main door and internal doors are different purchases. A bedroom privacy latch and a main-door lock are not the same category and should not be bought at the same price point.
  • Buy the lock yourself. You choose the brand and grade, and the warranty is in your name. Then ask for a labour-only quote.
  • Digital and smart locks are a different fitting job, usually take longer, and need a plan for what happens when the battery dies. Ask specifically whether the carpenter has fitted that model before.
  • If you are locked out, call a locksmith or your landlord — and expect to be asked to prove you live there, which is exactly as it should be. Do not attempt to force a door or window; the damage costs far more than the call-out, and a forced frame is a security problem afterwards. Keep a spare with someone nearby so this stays hypothetical.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a door lock in Delhi?
The indicative 2026 Delhi NCR labour range is ₹300–900 to remove an old lock and fit a new one, with handles, tower bolts and hinges at ₹150–500. The lock itself is bought separately and on a main door it usually costs more than the fitting. If several doors need attention, an hourly rate of ₹300–600 may work out better. These are market ranges, not XpertWorker prices; each professional quotes you free before starting.
Why is my key hard to turn?
Open the door and turn the key. If it moves smoothly with the door open but fights you when closed, the lock is fine — the door has dropped or the frame has shifted, and the latch is grinding against the strike plate. Look for a shiny worn mark on the plate, and check the hinge screws, since a loose top hinge causes a surprising number of "lock problems". If the key is stiff in the cylinder even with the door open, try dry graphite lubricant — never oil, which turns to paste in Delhi dust.
Should I change the locks when moving into a rented flat?
Yes, in the first week. You have no way of knowing how many keys exist — previous tenants, their families, a broker, a maid, a contractor, a landlord's spare lent out years ago. Discuss it with your landlord first, since most agree readily and many agreements expect them to hold a spare; hand one over rather than doing it silently, which is where disputes start. Keep the old lock, and check the balcony door, servant entrance and grille gate too.
How do I choose the right replacement lock?
Take the old lock to the shop, or photograph it alongside a tape measure. Locks come in specific sizes — backset, spindle length, cylinder length — and a mortise lock that does not match the existing cut-out means enlarging the mortise in the door, which is more work and permanent. Buy a main-door lock and an internal privacy latch as separate decisions rather than at the same price point, and buy it yourself so the warranty is in your name.
What should I do if I am locked out of my flat?
Call a locksmith or your landlord, and expect to be asked to prove you live there — that is exactly as it should be. Do not try to force a door or window: the damage costs considerably more than the call-out, and a forced frame leaves you with a security problem afterwards as well as a repair. The way to keep this hypothetical is to leave a spare key with a neighbour or family member nearby, rather than anywhere on the premises.
