Shifting an AC is quoted as two jobs — uninstall and reinstall — plus the extras, and copper piping charged per foot is usually what decides the total, not the labour. The ranges are below. The commonest overcharge is being told the gas must be refilled: a properly done removal pumps the gas down into the outdoor unit and reuses it, so a refill on a healthy AC should be the exception, not routine.

There is no such thing as "AC shifting" as a single job. That is the most useful sentence on this page, and it is the reason shifting quotes vary so wildly across Delhi NCR for what sounds like identical work.

Shifting an air conditioner is two separate jobs plus materials: the unit comes off one wall (an uninstall), it goes onto another (an install), and somewhere in between you either reuse the copper pipe or you buy new copper. A quote that arrives as one lump sum has bundled all three, and unless you know roughly what each part is worth, you have no way to tell a fair number from an invented one.

The gas question — and the commonest shifting overcharge

Here is where money quietly leaves. A split AC that is moved properly should not need a gas refill afterwards.

The correct method is a pump-down. Before disconnecting anything, the technician runs the unit and closes the service valves in sequence so the refrigerant is drawn into the outdoor unit's condenser and sealed there. The gas travels with the machine. At the new location the system is vacuumed and the valves reopened, and the original charge is still in there.

Watch out if a technician disconnects the pipes without pumping down first, your refrigerant vents into the room — and the refill you are then quoted is a bill you are paying for their shortcut.
  • Ask before they touch anything: "will you pump down?" The answer should be immediate and unhesitating. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing but competence.
  • A hiss when the pipes come apart is your gas leaving. If you hear it, the pump-down was skipped or done badly, and any refill quoted afterwards is a consequence of the method, not of your AC.
  • "Shifting always needs a gas top-up" is false. A correctly executed shift does not. Occasionally a very old unit with tired valves loses a little and needs topping up — that is a real exception, not the rule, and a technician should be able to show you a gauge reading rather than assert it.

Copper pipe: the line that decides your total

Two shifts of the same AC can differ by thousands of rupees, and copper is usually why.

The pipe between your indoor and outdoor units was cut to length for the old position. Move the indoor unit further from the outdoor unit and the old run will not reach — so you buy new pipe, by the foot, insulated. Move it closer and the existing pipe can often be reused, coiled neatly.

  • Same room, short move: the old pipe almost always reuses. Expect labour only.
  • Room to room in the same flat: sometimes reusable, often not. Measure the new run before agreeing a price.
  • New house, or a different floor: assume new copper. This is the case where a lump-sum quote given over the phone, before anyone has seen either wall, is worth very little.
  • Reused pipe that has been bent sharply or flattened: should be replaced. A kinked pipe restricts flow and the unit will underperform for years without anyone connecting it back to the day it moved.

Ask for the copper to be quoted separately and per foot, and ask how many feet. A quote that will not separate materials from labour is a quote you cannot check.

What a properly done shift includes

You are entitled to ask which of these happened. A shift that skips steps three and five looks identical on the day and fails quietly over the following months.

  • 1. Pump-down at the old location. Refrigerant recovered into the outdoor unit before a single joint is opened.
  • 2. Careful removal. Indoor unit off the bracket without bending the pipe, outdoor unit down without dropping it. Most shift damage happens in this five minutes.
  • 3. A new bracket, properly anchored. The old bracket stays on the old wall. Outdoor units are heavy and they vibrate; the anchor matters more than anything else on this list.
  • 4. Fresh flare joints. The copper ends are re-flared at the new position. Reusing an old flare is the commonest cause of a slow leak that shows up weeks later as "the AC is not cooling like it used to".
  • 5. A vacuum before the valves reopen. Air and Delhi's humidity must come out of the pipe run. Moisture inside a refrigerant loop turns acidic and shortens the compressor's life. This is the step most often skipped because nobody watching knows to look for the pump.
  • 6. Drain routed with a fall. The condensate pipe must run downhill the whole way. Get this wrong and your new wall gets a wet patch — the single most common complaint after a shift.
  • 7. Run and test. Cooling checked, joints checked for leaks, drainage watched for a few minutes with the unit running.

Five things to settle before anyone starts

Shifting is booked in a hurry — usually mid-move, with everything else going on. These five questions take two minutes and prevent almost every dispute we see.

  • "Is this quote uninstall, install, and copper — separately?" Three numbers, not one.
  • "Will you pump down the gas?" Ask it before work starts, not after you hear a hiss.
  • "How many feet of copper, and is it included?" If nobody has measured, nobody can answer, and the price will move later.
  • "Is the new bracket included, or extra?" The old one is not coming with you.
  • "Who carries the outdoor unit, and who is liable if it is damaged?" Worth asking out loud on a high floor or a tight staircase.

One more thing worth knowing: if you are moving house, book the uninstall and the install as one job with one professional where you can. Split them between two people and neither owns the outcome — the second technician will blame the first for the flares, the first is already gone, and the leak is yours.

Add time for drilling a new core hole, a longer copper run, or a difficult outdoor position. Beware anyone promising a full split-AC shift in under an hour: the vacuum step alone takes time.
Is it cheaper to shift an old AC or buy a new one?
Shift it, in almost every case — the labour is a fraction of a new unit. The exception is a unit already needing major work: if the compressor is failing or the outdoor coil is corroded through, you are paying to move a problem. A useful test is whether the AC was cooling properly the week before the move. If it was, shifting is worth it. If it was not, fix the fault first or decide on the unit before you pay to relocate it.
