The short answer

Compressor replacement is the most expensive AC repair there is, priced by tonnage and by whether the unit is inverter or fixed-speed — the ranges are below. Before agreeing, get the diagnosis checked: an AC that hums but will not start is far more often a failed capacitor, and a capacitor is a fraction of the cost. Check the warranty too, because compressors commonly carry longer cover than the rest of the unit.

"The compressor has gone" is the sentence nobody wants to hear about an air conditioner, and it is worth knowing two things about it before you react.

The first is that a genuine compressor failure is uncommon. Compressors are the most robust part of the machine and they usually outlive everything around them. The parts that actually fail in Delhi — capacitors, fan motors, PCBs, contactors — produce symptoms that look similar from the outside and cost a fraction as much to fix.

The second is that when a compressor genuinely has failed, the decision is rarely "fix it or don't". It is "fix it or replace the machine", and that depends almost entirely on the age of the unit and whether it is under warranty.

Compressor replacement cost — Delhi NCR, 2026

The compressor figure is all-in: the part, the labour, and the refrigerant recharge that a compressor swap always requires. The rows below it are the cheaper faults that get mistaken for it.

JobTypical market rangeWhat it usually includes
Compressor replacement — 1.5 ton₹6,000–16,000Part, labour and the gas recharge that always goes with it
PCB repair (inverter AC)₹2,000–4,500On an inverter unit, a dead PCB can stop the compressor starting
Gas refill — R32 (modern split ACs)₹2,800–4,000What a low charge costs — often the real problem
Split AC service & cleaning (per unit)₹500–900A choked coil causes overheating and cut-outs that mimic compressor failure
Split AC deep clean / jet wash₹900–1,500The deeper clean, where the coil is badly fouled

How to check the diagnosis before you agree

You do not need to understand refrigeration to ask the right questions. You need to know that a compressor diagnosis is measurable, and to ask for the measurement.

  • "What are the winding resistance readings?" A compressor is a motor. A technician can measure its windings with a multimeter and tell whether it is open circuit, shorted, or earthed. That is a number, and a real diagnosis has one.
  • "Is it drawing current?" A compressor that hums, draws heavy current and trips is a different fault from one that is completely dead — and the first is very often a failed capacitor, which is an inexpensive part.
  • "Have you checked the capacitor?" Ask it directly. A tired start capacitor is the single most common cause of a compressor that will not start, and it is a fraction of the cost.
  • "Is the outdoor coil clean?" A coil packed with Delhi dust makes the compressor overheat and cut out on thermal overload. That looks like failure and is fixed by cleaning.
  • "Is it a gas problem?" A very low charge makes a compressor run hot and cut out. See our gas refill guide for how that is verified.
Watch out a compressor verdict delivered without a multimeter, a gauge set, or a look at the capacitor is a guess about the most expensive part on the machine — get a second opinion before agreeing.

Check the warranty first — most people forget

This is the single most valuable paragraph on this page. Indian AC manufacturers commonly give a separate, much longer warranty on the compressor than on the rest of the unit — five years and ten years are both common, against one or two years on the machine overall.

So an AC that is four years old and out of general warranty may still have a compressor covered by the manufacturer. In that case you pay for labour and gas, not for the part — a completely different number.

  • Find the invoice or the warranty card before you agree to anything.
  • Call the brand's service line first if the compressor is in warranty. An independent technician cannot claim it for you, and opening the sealed system may void it.
  • Warranty covers the part, not usually the labour or the gas. Expect to pay those.
  • Say so up front to any technician you call. A good one will tell you to go to the brand.

Repair or buy a new AC?

Once warranty is ruled out, this is arithmetic against the age of the unit.

Age of unitUsual answerWhy
Under 5 yearsRepairEverything else on the machine has years left. Check warranty first
5–8 yearsJudgement callCompare the quote against a new unit. Factor in that a new inverter AC will cut your running cost
Over 8–10 yearsUsually replaceYou are fitting an expensive part into a machine whose coil, fan and PCB are all near the end. And an old R22 unit is on a phased-out gas

Two further points that matter in Delhi. An older non-inverter unit running ten hours a day costs meaningfully more to run than a modern inverter — over a Delhi summer that difference is real money, and it belongs in the calculation. And if your unit is on R22, that refrigerant is being phased out globally and gets more expensive every year, which shortens the sensible remaining life of the machine regardless of the compressor.

If you decide to replace, our installation guide covers what fitting the new one should cost, and the tonnage guide covers sizing it properly rather than repeating whatever was there before.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AC compressor replacement cost in Delhi NCR?
The indicative 2026 Delhi NCR market range for a 1.5 ton compressor replacement is ₹6,000–16,000. That figure is all-in: the part, the labour, and the refrigerant recharge that a compressor swap always requires. It is the most expensive routine AC repair there is, which is exactly why the diagnosis is worth checking before you agree. These are market ranges, not XpertWorker prices; each technician quotes you free before starting.
How do I know if my AC compressor has really failed?
Ask for measurements, not a verdict. A compressor is a motor, so its windings can be tested with a multimeter for an open circuit, a short or an earth fault — that is a number a technician can give you. Ask whether it draws current, whether the start capacitor has been checked, whether the outdoor coil is clean, and whether the refrigerant charge was measured. A failed capacitor, a fouled coil and a low gas charge all produce symptoms that look like compressor failure and cost far less to fix.
Is my AC compressor still under warranty?
Quite possibly, and this is the most commonly missed saving on this repair. Indian manufacturers usually give the compressor a separate and much longer warranty than the rest of the unit — five or ten years is common against one or two on the machine overall. So a four-year-old AC out of general warranty may still have a covered compressor. Find the invoice, call the brand before anyone opens the system, and expect to pay labour and gas even when the part is covered.
Should I replace the compressor or buy a new AC?
Under five years old, repair — the rest of the machine has plenty of life. Between five and eight, compare the quote against a new unit and factor in that a modern inverter AC will cut your running cost over a Delhi summer. Past eight to ten years, replacing usually wins: you would be fitting an expensive part into a machine whose coil, fan and PCB are all nearing the end, and if it runs on R22 that refrigerant is being phased out and getting dearer every year.
Does a compressor replacement need a gas refill too?
Yes, always. Replacing a compressor means opening the sealed refrigerant circuit, so the system must be evacuated and recharged as part of the job. A quote that lists the compressor and then adds gas as a surprise afterwards has been structured to look cheaper than it is — the indicative range above is all-in for exactly that reason. Ask whether the quoted figure includes the recharge before agreeing.
Does XpertWorker do the repair or set the price?
Neither. XpertWorker is a marketplace that connects you with independent local technicians. We do not set their prices, we are not their employer, and we never charge you anything. The technician quotes you directly and free before any work begins, and you pay them directly.
