"The compressor has gone" is the sentence nobody wants to hear about an air conditioner, and it is worth knowing two things about it before you react.
The first is that a genuine compressor failure is uncommon. Compressors are the most robust part of the machine and they usually outlive everything around them. The parts that actually fail in Delhi — capacitors, fan motors, PCBs, contactors — produce symptoms that look similar from the outside and cost a fraction as much to fix.
The second is that when a compressor genuinely has failed, the decision is rarely "fix it or don't". It is "fix it or replace the machine", and that depends almost entirely on the age of the unit and whether it is under warranty.

Every figure below is an indicative market range collected from what independent technicians in Delhi NCR generally charge — a guide to help you judge a quote, not a quote itself.

Compressor replacement cost — Delhi NCR, 2026
The compressor figure is all-in: the part, the labour, and the refrigerant recharge that a compressor swap always requires. The rows below it are the cheaper faults that get mistaken for it.
| Job | Typical market range | What it usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor replacement — 1.5 ton | ₹6,000–16,000 | Part, labour and the gas recharge that always goes with it |
| PCB repair (inverter AC) | ₹2,000–4,500 | On an inverter unit, a dead PCB can stop the compressor starting |
| Gas refill — R32 (modern split ACs) | ₹2,800–4,000 | What a low charge costs — often the real problem |
| Split AC service & cleaning (per unit) | ₹500–900 | A choked coil causes overheating and cut-outs that mimic compressor failure |
| Split AC deep clean / jet wash | ₹900–1,500 | The deeper clean, where the coil is badly fouled |

Get free quotesHow to check the diagnosis before you agree
You do not need to understand refrigeration to ask the right questions. You need to know that a compressor diagnosis is measurable, and to ask for the measurement.
- "What are the winding resistance readings?" A compressor is a motor. A technician can measure its windings with a multimeter and tell whether it is open circuit, shorted, or earthed. That is a number, and a real diagnosis has one.
- "Is it drawing current?" A compressor that hums, draws heavy current and trips is a different fault from one that is completely dead — and the first is very often a failed capacitor, which is an inexpensive part.
- "Have you checked the capacitor?" Ask it directly. A tired start capacitor is the single most common cause of a compressor that will not start, and it is a fraction of the cost.
- "Is the outdoor coil clean?" A coil packed with Delhi dust makes the compressor overheat and cut out on thermal overload. That looks like failure and is fixed by cleaning.
- "Is it a gas problem?" A very low charge makes a compressor run hot and cut out. See our gas refill guide for how that is verified.
Check the warranty first — most people forget
This is the single most valuable paragraph on this page. Indian AC manufacturers commonly give a separate, much longer warranty on the compressor than on the rest of the unit — five years and ten years are both common, against one or two years on the machine overall.
So an AC that is four years old and out of general warranty may still have a compressor covered by the manufacturer. In that case you pay for labour and gas, not for the part — a completely different number.
- Find the invoice or the warranty card before you agree to anything.
- Call the brand's service line first if the compressor is in warranty. An independent technician cannot claim it for you, and opening the sealed system may void it.
- Warranty covers the part, not usually the labour or the gas. Expect to pay those.
- Say so up front to any technician you call. A good one will tell you to go to the brand.
Repair or buy a new AC?
Once warranty is ruled out, this is arithmetic against the age of the unit.
| Age of unit | Usual answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 years | Repair | Everything else on the machine has years left. Check warranty first |
| 5–8 years | Judgement call | Compare the quote against a new unit. Factor in that a new inverter AC will cut your running cost |
| Over 8–10 years | Usually replace | You are fitting an expensive part into a machine whose coil, fan and PCB are all near the end. And an old R22 unit is on a phased-out gas |
Two further points that matter in Delhi. An older non-inverter unit running ten hours a day costs meaningfully more to run than a modern inverter — over a Delhi summer that difference is real money, and it belongs in the calculation. And if your unit is on R22, that refrigerant is being phased out globally and gets more expensive every year, which shortens the sensible remaining life of the machine regardless of the compressor.
If you decide to replace, our installation guide covers what fitting the new one should cost, and the tonnage guide covers sizing it properly rather than repeating whatever was there before.
