The complaint is always the same: the machine smells like a damp cupboard, and clothes come out of a full wash smelling slightly sour, especially towels. It is worst in the monsoon and it is worst on front-loading machines.
The cause is a film of detergent residue, body oils and lint sitting in warm, damp, sealed places where air never moves. Bacteria live in that film. Nothing you add to a normal wash reaches it, because a normal wash is short, cold and full of the same detergent that created the problem.

Where does the smell actually come from?
Four places, in order of how often they are the culprit.
- The door gasket on a front loader. The thick rubber ring around the door has a fold in it that traps water, lint, hair and a coin or two. Pull the fold back gently with your fingers and look. On a machine that has never been cleaned there, you will usually find black or grey slime. This is the number one source.
- The detergent drawer and its housing. Detergent and softener do not fully rinse away. They set into a sticky layer in the drawer, and worse, in the dark cavity behind it where you cannot see. Softener residue in particular grows mould readily.
- The drain pump filter. Behind the small flap at the bottom front of a front loader. It collects lint, hair and anything that came out of a pocket, and it sits in water permanently.
- The outer tub and drain hose. The space between the drum you can see and the outer tub you cannot. This is where a long-term biofilm builds. If the first three are clean and the smell persists, this is where it is, and it is what a hot maintenance wash targets.

Do all of this in one session. Doing only one part is why the smell usually comes back.
- 1. Clean the gasket by hand. Peel back every part of the rubber fold and wipe it out with a cloth and a mild cleaner. Get right around the circle, including the bottom, which is the worst part. Dry it afterwards.
- 2. Pull the detergent drawer right out. Most drawers release with a catch in the middle. Soak it in hot water, scrub the softener compartment and its siphon cap, and scrub the cavity it slides into with an old toothbrush. That cavity is the part everybody misses.
- 3. Clean the drain pump filter. Lay a towel and a shallow tray first. Unscrew it slowly, let the water out, clear the lint and hair, and check the impeller behind it turns freely.
- 4. Run the hottest empty cycle the machine has. Nothing in the drum, no clothes. Use a proper washing machine cleaner, or plain white vinegar in the drum, or soda crystals. Do not mix vinegar and bleach, and do not use bleach on a machine with stainless internals unless the manual allows it. Heat is the active ingredient here, not the additive.
- 5. Leave the door and the drawer open afterwards. Permanently, between washes.
Watch out if the smell is sewage-like rather than musty, the problem is the drain, not the machine — a dry or missing trap at the floor drain lets sewer gas back up the hose, and no amount of drum cleaning will touch it.
Why Delhi machines smell more
This is not your imagination, and it is not the brand.
- Hard water plus extra detergent. Delhi and Gurgaon water is hard. Hard water stops detergent lathering, so people instinctively add more, and the excess does not rinse out. That surplus is the food supply for everything that smells. Using the correct dose, or a slightly higher-quality detergent rather than a larger scoop, does more than any cleaning product. - Monsoon humidity in a sealed drum. Close a front-loader door in July and you have sealed warm damp air into a dark steel drum. Two days later it smells. This one habit — leaving the door ajar — solves more smell complaints than any product.
- Cold washes only. Most Indian households wash cold, all year. Cold water never melts the oily film that builds inside the machine. A monthly hot empty cycle is the counterweight.
- Washing machines in bathrooms and on balconies. A bathroom is already humid; a balcony machine sits in dust and monsoon damp. Both slow down drying between washes.
- Wet clothes left in the drum. In summer a load left in for a few hours smells before you get back to it, and that smell transfers to the machine.
How do I stop the smell coming back?
Five habits. None of them takes real effort, and together they keep a machine odour-free indefinitely.
- Leave the door and the detergent drawer open between washes. The single most effective habit there is.
- Run a hot empty maintenance wash once a month. Twice a month in the monsoon if your machine lives in a humid corner.
- Measure the detergent. Follow the dose on the pack for hard water, and resist the urge to top it up because there is no foam. Use less softener, or skip it — softener residue is a major contributor.
- Take the load out as soon as the cycle ends. Set a timer if you tend to forget.
- Wipe the gasket dry after the last wash of the day. Ten seconds with a cloth.

When the smell is not the drum at all
If you have cleaned everything and the smell is still there, look at these before assuming the machine is finished.
- A burning or hot electrical smell. Nothing to do with hygiene. Stop using the machine and get it checked — it can be the motor, the belt slipping, or a wiring or board fault.
- A drain smell. Sewer gas coming back through the drain hose or the floor trap. A plumber deals with the trap; the machine is innocent.
- Standing water that never leaves the drum. A partial drain blockage keeps a pool of dirty water in the machine permanently. See washing machine not draining.
- A very old machine with a corroded outer tub. At some point the biofilm is inside surfaces that cannot be cleaned. A technician can tell you honestly whether a deep service will help.
