Power Cut & Inverter Tips for a Delhi Summer

1. Check the water level every month in summer

If you have a standard flooded lead-acid battery — the common tall one with six caps on top — this is the single thing that decides how long it lasts.

• Check monthly through summer, every two to three months in winter. Delhi heat evaporates the electrolyte far faster than most people expect.
• Distilled water only. Not RO water, not filtered water, not tap water. Minerals in ordinary water permanently damage the plates.
• Fill to the marked level, no higher. Overfilling pushes acid out during charging, which corrodes the terminals and the trolley.
• Top up after a full charge, not before.

A battery run dry for even a few weeks in a Delhi summer will never recover its full capacity. This is the commonest reason an inverter battery dies years early.

2. Give it air, and keep it out of the sun

Batteries charge more efficiently and last longer when they are cool, and they vent hydrogen while charging, which needs to disperse.

• Never enclose an inverter battery in a sealed cabinet or a box with no airflow.
• Keep it off a hot balcony in direct sun. A shaded, ventilated corner indoors is far better than an exposed one outside.
• Do not stack things on top of it, and do not put it in a cupboard with the door shut “so it looks tidy”.
• Keep the terminals clean. White or bluish crust is corrosion and it increases resistance — a professional will clean and grease them during a service.

3. Know what your inverter can and cannot run

Most Delhi households discover their inverter’s limits during the first long cut of the season, usually by tripping it.

• Fans, lights, TV, router, phone chargers — what a domestic inverter is sized for, and what you should plan around.
• Fridge — often possible, but it takes a large share of the capacity and shortens backup considerably.
• Air conditioner, geyser, microwave, iron, motor pump — generally beyond an ordinary domestic inverter. Running them is how people find out.
• Know which sockets are on the inverter circuit. Label them. In the middle of a cut, in the dark, is a poor time to work it out.

4. Do the annual check in March, not May

Everything about getting an electrician is easier before the season starts, and a battery problem found in March is a planned purchase rather than an emergency one.

• Ask for the battery to be load-tested, not just looked at. A battery can show a healthy voltage at rest and still collapse under load.
• Have the terminals cleaned and the water topped up.
• Check the backup time you actually get against what you used to get. A noticeable drop is the warning.
• If the battery is more than three or four years old and backup has halved, plan the replacement rather than waiting for it to strand you.

5. Safety points people skip

• No naked flame near a charging battery. It vents hydrogen. This is not theoretical.
• Keep it away from children. Terminals are live and the electrolyte is acid.
• Never bridge or bypass the inverter’s own fuse to stop it tripping. The trip is protection, and the cause is a load problem.
