Why Is My AC Icing Up? Frost on the Coil and Copper Pipe (Delhi)

You look behind the indoor unit and the copper line is furred with white frost. Or you open the front flap and the aluminium fins are behind a solid sheet of ice. Meanwhile the room is barely cooling, and the AC seems to be trying very hard.

Here is the mechanism in one line. The coil in your indoor unit gets cold, and the room air blowing across it keeps it above freezing. Take that air away, and the coil drops below zero and starts building ice. Once ice forms, it blocks the airflow further, which makes more ice. That is why a small problem turns into a solid block within a couple of hours.

So an icing AC almost always means one of two things: not enough air is moving across the coil, or there is not enough refrigerant in the system. This page separates the two, tells you which one you can fix for free, and explains why running the unit while it is frozen is the expensive mistake to avoid.

First: switch it off and let it thaw

Do this before any diagnosis, because everything else depends on it.

  • Stop cooling. Turn the AC off, or better, set it to fan-only mode so the blower keeps running while the compressor rests. Fan mode melts the ice much faster than switching off completely.
  • Put a towel or a tray under the indoor unit. All that ice is about to become water, and more of it than the drain tray can carry at once. Expect a drip into the room while it thaws.
  • Wait. It takes one to three hours. Do not chip the ice off, do not pour hot water on it, and do not attack it with anything hard. The aluminium fins bend at a touch and a bent coil cools worse for the rest of the unit’s life.
  • Do not keep running it frozen. This is the important one. When the coil is iced, liquid refrigerant can travel back to the compressor instead of gas, and that is one of the ways compressors are damaged. Nothing else on this page costs you as much as ignoring this.
Watch out the single most expensive thing you can do with an icing AC is keep running it in cooling mode because it still blows some cold air — that is how a cheap airflow fault turns into a compressor problem.

Only once it has fully thawed can you check anything meaningfully, or let a technician test it. A frozen unit tells nobody anything.

The airflow checks — all free, and usually the answer

Starved airflow is the more common of the two causes by a wide margin, and in Delhi it is nearly always dust. Work through these once the coil has thawed.

  • 1. The filters. Slide them out and hold them up to the light. If light does not pass through the mesh, air is not passing through it either, and that alone will freeze a coil. Rinse under a tap, dry fully in the shade, refit.
  • 2. The coil behind the filters. Shine a torch in. Clean aluminium fins look like metal; a starved coil looks furred grey-brown. Filters catch the coarse dust, but the fine dust that Delhi air carries gets past them and packs into the fins over a few seasons. That needs a wet clean, not a wipe.
  • 3. The fan speed setting. An AC left on the lowest fan speed, on a low set temperature, through a cool night, is a classic icing setup: less air across the coil, compressor running long, coil drops below freezing. Try medium or high fan for a few days and see if the frost returns.
  • 4. What is in front of the unit. A tall almirah, a curtain, a false ceiling box or a shelf placed close to the indoor unit disturbs the air it is trying to pull in and push out. Give it clear space.
  • 5. The blower wheel. The drum-shaped fan behind the coil collects a felt of dust in its blades and quietly loses a large part of its air output. You will not see it without opening the unit, but it is worth naming to a technician, because it is often skipped.

If cleaning the filters ends the icing, that was the whole fault and you have paid nothing. This happens more often than people expect.

How to tell airflow from low refrigerant

The two causes look similar from the sofa, but they leave different clues. Use these before anyone quotes you for gas.

  • Where the ice starts. Frost that begins at the thin copper pipe outside, near the outdoor unit valve, and creeps inward is more typical of a refrigerant problem. Ice that forms across the face of the indoor coil, most heavily where the filter is dirtiest, points at airflow.
  • Whether cleaning helps at all. Wash the filters properly, run the fan on high, and watch for two days. If the frost is gone, it was airflow. If a spotless unit on high fan still ices, the case for a refrigerant problem is real.
  • The cooling history. Airflow faults creep up over a season or two as dust builds. A sudden loss of cooling that arrived within days, with ice appearing at the same time, fits a leak better.
  • The age and the last service. An AC that has never had a wet clean in four Delhi summers is an airflow story until proven otherwise, whatever the first quote says.

And this is the sentence to hold on to: refrigerant is not consumed. An AC is a sealed system, and the gas does not get used up over a season. Why Delhi ACs ice up, and when it happens

The pattern here is seasonal and it is worth recognising in your own home.

  • Late in the season, after months of dust. An AC that ran cleanly in April starts icing in July because the coil has taken three months of fine dust. Nothing broke; the airflow simply dropped below the threshold.
  • On cooler monsoon nights. When the outdoor temperature falls after rain but the AC is still set low with the fan on minimum, the coil has less heat load to work against and drops below freezing more easily. Icing complaints cluster here.
  • In rooms with poor air return. Small Delhi bedrooms with the unit mounted close to a wall or boxed into a false ceiling recess do not give the indoor unit enough room to breathe.
  • In older units with tired blowers. A blower that has slowed with age and dust moves less air every year, and eventually crosses the line where the coil freezes.

Prevention is dull and effective: rinse the filters every couple of weeks in season, get a proper wet clean before summer rather than during it, and do not run the unit on the lowest fan speed all night out of habit. When to call, and what to insist on

Call a technician when the unit ices again after a proper filter clean and a run on high fan, when you can see the coil is packed with grime, or when ice returns within a day of thawing.

  • Ask for the airflow to be checked first. Coil condition, blower wheel, fan speed and filter, in that order, before any gauge comes out. This is the correct sequence and a good technician will follow it without being asked.
  • If gas is proposed, ask where the leak is. A pressure test, a soap or dye check, and a specific answer — a flare nut, a joint, a corroded section of coil. A verdict with nothing to point at is a guess.
  • Ask whether the unit was allowed to thaw before testing. Readings taken on a frozen system are not reliable, and any conclusion drawn from them is not either.
  • Mention how long it has been since the last wet clean. If the answer is years, that belongs in the conversation before any part is discussed.

Because the room and the outdoor air are cooler at night, so there is less heat for the coil to absorb, and a low set temperature with the fan on minimum speed can push the coil below freezing. It is a very common pattern on cooler monsoon nights in Delhi. Try running a higher fan speed and a slightly higher set temperature overnight, or use sleep mode, and see if the frost stops. Does an icing AC mean the compressor is damaged?
