If water is coming through a ceiling right now, skip to the next section — the shut-off comes before the price, and every minute of running water is more damage.
For everyone else: an emergency call-out is normally the standard job price plus an out-of-hours premium. That premium is legitimate. Someone is leaving their home at 1am, in a city where getting across it takes an hour, to do a job they cannot survey first. What you should not accept is a refusal to name the premium before they set off.
The genuinely useful part of this page is the third section: knowing which problems actually cannot wait is worth more than any negotiation, because the cheapest emergency is the one you correctly decide is not an emergency.

The first five minutes: stop the water
Do these in order. They cost nothing and they decide how big the bill is.
- 1. Find the stop valve and close it. In most Delhi flats there is an isolating valve where the supply enters, often in the bathroom or near the kitchen — and usually a smaller valve under each basin and behind each WC. Turn clockwise. If you only ever learn one thing about your plumbing, make it where this valve is, before you need it.
- 2. If the leak is from the overhead tank line, switch off the pump and stop it refilling.
- 3. Kill the power to the affected area if water is anywhere near sockets, wiring or a distribution board. Water and electricity together is the part of this that can actually hurt someone — switch it off at the board before you start mopping.
- 4. Switch off the geyser if the leak is hot water. An electric geyser heating an empty tank is a damaged geyser.
- 5. Contain and photograph. Buckets and towels, then photos of the leak and the damage. Do this before cleaning up — for a landlord, a neighbour or an insurer, this is the only version of events that survives.
- 6. Warn the flat below. Water goes down. Telling them early is far better than them discovering it.

Is this actually an emergency?
Paying a night premium for something that could have waited eight hours is the commonest avoidable cost here. This is the honest split.

The test is simple: if you can isolate it and it is causing no further damage, it is a morning job. Isolating a leak and booking at normal rates is not being cheap — it is the same repair without the premium, done by someone who has slept.
Getting a fair deal at 2am
An emergency is the weakest negotiating position there is, and everyone in the trade knows it. These few habits close most of that gap.
- Ask for the call-out premium on the phone, before they leave. A specific number. "We will see when we get there" is the answer to avoid.
- Describe the problem precisely. Where the water is coming from, whether you have isolated it, whether it is hot or cold. A plumber who knows what they are coming to arrives with the right parts, and one visit is cheaper than two.
- Separate stabilising from repairing. At night the right job is often to stop the water and make it safe; the proper repair — especially anything inside a wall — is daytime work with materials and light. Agree which one you are buying tonight.
- Do not agree to breaking a wall at 2am unless water is actively flowing and there is no other way to stop it. Concealed leaks are a daylight job — our seepage guide covers how they are traced.
- Get the total before work starts, premium and job separately, and keep the photos you took.
- Afterwards, find and label your stop valve. Tonight happened partly because you were looking for it in the dark. Ten minutes tomorrow prevents most of the cost of next time.
