What to check yourself first, before calling anyone

  • 1. Look at the back of the fridge. Pull it out from the wall and look at the black grille or tubing on the rear panel, or at the coils underneath. If they are wearing a grey felt of dust, that is your most likely answer and it is free to fix.
  • 2. Do the currency-note test. Close the door on a currency note so that half of it sticks out, then pull it. It should grip. If it slides out with almost no resistance, the seal is not holding at that spot. Repeat at the top, middle and bottom of every door.
  • 3. Check whether the doors are actually shutting. Watch someone else use the fridge for a day. A door left a finger-width open, a jar sticking out of a shelf, or a bag of vegetables stopping the door closing fully will keep the compressor running all night.
  • 4. Read the thermostat or temperature setting. Many people crank the dial to the coldest setting in summer and forget it. The coldest setting makes the fridge work continuously for a temperature you almost certainly do not need.
  • 5. Measure the gap around the fridge. Is it shoved into a tight alcove, with a cupboard directly overhead and the sides touching the walls? A fridge needs a clear air gap behind, above and at the sides to throw its heat away.
  • 6. Look at how full it is. Packed to the roof, with the air vents at the back covered by containers, means cold air cannot circulate and the fridge keeps running to fix a problem it cannot reach.
Watch out unplug the fridge at the socket before you clean anything at the back — the condenser sits next to live electrical connections and the compressor gets hot enough to burn.

Dust on the condenser coils: the Delhi cause

This is the first thing to fix in any Delhi home, and it costs nothing. The condenser is the black tubing or grille on the back of your fridge, or a coil underneath it on some models. Its whole job is to release into your kitchen the heat that was pulled out of your food.

Heat leaves the condenser by touching air. Put a blanket of dust over it and that heat cannot get out, so the refrigerant returns to the compressor still hot, the fridge never reaches its set temperature, and the compressor simply keeps running. In this city that blanket builds up remarkably fast — road dust, construction dust, smog-season particles, and kitchen grease that makes it all stick.

  • How to confirm it. Unplug the fridge, pull it out, and run a finger along the tubing at the back. Clean metal or plastic means this is not your problem. A grey furry deposit means it is.
  • How to clean it. With the fridge unplugged, brush the dust off with a soft dry brush or a dry paint brush, and vacuum it up as you go so it does not simply resettle. A long thin brush helps for coils underneath the cabinet. Work gently — the tubing carries refrigerant and the thin fins bend easily.
  • What not to do. Do not spray water or cleaning liquid on the back of a fridge, do not use anything metal, and never bend or lever the tubing to get behind it.

The same clogging logic applies to the space around the fridge. A fridge pushed flat against the wall, or boxed into a tight kitchen unit with a cupboard on top, is re-breathing its own hot air. Most manuals ask for a clear gap behind and above — a hand’s width behind and a good clear space overhead is the practical version. Moving the fridge four inches forward is free and sometimes it is the entire fix.

A door seal that has given up

A failing door gasket is the second big cause, and it is behind a surprising share of all fridge complaints. The gasket is the soft rubber strip running around the edge of the door. When it stops gripping, cold air spills out and warm kitchen air walks in continuously, so the fridge never stops working.

The currency-note test. Shut a currency note in the door with half of it hanging out and pull it. If it comes out cleanly with no drag, the seal has failed at that point. Do it at four or five points around each door, because gaskets usually fail in one section first — typically at the hinge side or along the bottom, where the rubber is most creased.

  • Hardened or cracked rubber. Delhi summers and years of heat make the gasket go stiff. A gasket that no longer springs back when you press it has lost its seal even if it looks intact.
  • A dirty gasket. Sticky spills, dust and crumbs in the folds stop it from sitting flat. Wipe it with warm soapy water on a cloth, get into the folds, and dry it. Do this before you conclude the gasket needs replacing — sometimes cleaning is the whole repair.
  • A torn or lifted section. Look for a piece that has come away from the door channel, or a tear at a corner. This is a defined replacement job for a technician.
  • Overloaded door shelves. Rows of heavy bottles in the door pull it out of alignment over time, so it stops sitting square against the cabinet.
  • A fridge that is not level. The doors are meant to swing shut on their own. If yours needs a push, the cabinet is probably tilted forward on uneven flooring.

A hot kitchen, a cold setting, and an overpacked cabinet

If the coils are clean and the seal grips, look at what you are asking the fridge to do. These are the causes people dismiss, and between them they explain most of the remaining cases.

  • The kitchen is genuinely very hot. A closed Delhi kitchen in May, with the sun on the wall and a gas burner running, is a hard place to be a fridge. The hotter the room, the longer the compressor must run for the same result. Longer running in peak summer, tapering off in winter, is normal behaviour and not a defect.
  • The fridge stands in the worst spot in the room. Beside the stove, next to the oven or microwave, or in direct sun from a west-facing window. Moving it away from a heat source is free and it changes the running time noticeably.
  • The thermostat is set too cold. Setting the dial to maximum does not cool food faster, it just moves the target further away and keeps the compressor on. A middle setting suits most homes; only push it colder if food is genuinely not staying cold.   • It is packed too full, or too empty. Crammed full blocks the vents at the back so cold air cannot circulate. Almost empty is also inefficient, because there is nothing holding the cold when the door opens. Leave clear space around the vents.
  • Hot food and uncovered liquids. A hot vessel put straight in dumps a large amount of heat and steam into the cabinet, and the fridge then runs for a long stretch to recover.
  • The door is opened constantly. In a Delhi summer that is unavoidable to a degree, but standing with the door open, or a household where four people fetch cold water separately every hour, adds up.

When to call a technician, and what to tell them

Call someone once the free checks are done and the fridge is still not resting. The signs that this is now a real fault:

  • Clean coils, a good seal, sensible settings, and it still never stops. That points at the thermostat or temperature sensor, the condenser fan, the defrost system, or a cooling circuit that has lost some of its gas.

  • Heavy ice on the back wall of the fridge compartment or in the freezer. Usually a defrost fault. It also makes the fridge run harder, so the two symptoms travel together.

That short list often tells an experienced technician what to bring.
