People survive these shocks and conclude they are harmless. That reasoning is the danger. The same fault delivers a mild tingle to a dry adult in slippers and a lethal shock to a wet person standing barefoot on a wet bathroom floor. Nothing about the fault changed — only the person.

What to do right now

In this order. It takes two minutes and it removes the immediate risk.

  • 1. Stop touching it. Do not test it again to be sure, and never test a suspect surface with a wet hand or bare feet. You have all the information you need.
  • 2. Switch that appliance off at the wall and unplug it. Hold the plug body, not the pins, and do it with dry hands. If it is a geyser or a motor with no plug, switch off its circuit at the distribution board instead.
  • 3. If the shock came from a tap, a shower fitting or any plumbing, switch off the geyser and the water motor at the board. Metal plumbing carries current around a flat very efficiently, and the tap is rarely the faulty item — it is just the metal you happened to touch.
  • 4. Tell the household. Nobody bathes there and nobody uses that appliance until it has been checked. This is the step people skip.
  • 5. Call an electrician today. Not next week. Say the words “we are getting a shock from” when you call, because it changes how quickly someone comes.
Watch out A tingle in dry weather can be a fatal shock in a wet bathroom, on a wet monsoon floor, or to a child. The severity you felt tells you nothing about the severity of the fault.

What a shock from a tap or appliance actually means

It means current is leaking out of where it should be and has found a path to earth — through the appliance body, through the plumbing, and through you.

In a correctly wired flat that cannot happen, for two reasons. First, the metal body of every appliance is connected to a proper earth, so leaking current runs harmlessly into the ground instead of waiting for a person. Second, an RCCB at the distribution board watches for exactly this kind of leakage and cuts the power in a fraction of a second.

So a shock you can feel tells you at least one of these is missing or has failed:

  • There is no working earth at that point, or the earth wire is disconnected, corroded or was never run in the first place.
  • There is no RCCB, or it has been bypassed, or it is faulty. Many older Delhi flats have only MCBs, which protect the wiring from overload but do nothing about leakage through a person.
  • An appliance has an internal fault — most often a geyser element, a washing machine motor, a water pump or a fridge compressor — and is energising its own metal body.

Usually it is a combination: an appliance developed a fault, and the safety layers that should have caught it were not there. That is why fixing only the appliance is not the whole job.

Why this happens so often in Delhi flats

This is not a rare freak fault here. There are specific, local reasons it turns up again and again.

  • Monsoon humidity and damp walls. Damp is a conductor. Insulation that holds up fine in April starts leaking in July, which is why so many households discover this problem in the same fortnight. Shocks that appear only in the rains are a classic sign of a weak earth plus moisture.
  • Older flats built with no real earthing. Plenty of Delhi housing from earlier decades has a nominal earth wire that goes nowhere useful, or an earth pit that dried out and was never watered or maintained.
  • Two-pin sockets everywhere. A two-pin socket has no earth at all. Anything with a metal body plugged into one has no protection by design, no matter how good the appliance is.
  • Aluminium wiring and old joints. Decades of heating and cooling loosen and corrode connections, including earth connections, which fail silently because nothing stops working when an earth fails.
  • Geysers, the single commonest culprit. A heating element sits in water. When it develops a pinhole, the water and everything connected to it — the tank, the pipe, the tap in the next room — becomes live. This is why the shock so often arrives at a tap rather than at the geyser.
  • Water motors and submersible pumps in wet, exposed locations, often wired hastily and shared between flats.

What you can safely check before the electrician arrives

All of this is done with power off or with no tools at all. It narrows the fault down and makes the visit shorter.

  • Is it one appliance or several? With the suspect appliance unplugged, does the tingle stop? If yes, that appliance is the source. If the tap still tingles with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring or the earthing itself, which is more serious.
  • Does it happen only after the geyser has run? Very strong clue. Switch the geyser off at the board, wait, and see whether the tap goes quiet.
  • Does it happen only in the rains, or only when the floor is wet? Note it. That points at moisture plus a weak earth.
  • Look at the distribution board without opening it. Is there a wider device with a TEST button, separate from the row of ordinary breakers? That is an RCCB. If there is none, tell the electrician — it changes what needs quoting.
  • Look at your sockets. Are the ones feeding metal-bodied appliances three-pin, or two-pin? Two-pin means no earth.
  • Smell and look. Any hot-plastic smell, scorch marks, or warm switchplates anywhere? Report all of it.

What you must not do: do not clip a wire from an appliance to a tap or a window grille as a home-made earth, do not run a wire into the floor, and do not pour water into an earth pit hoping to improve it. All three are commonly suggested and all three can make the flat more dangerous, not less.

What the electrician will do, and what to insist on

A proper visit for this fault has three parts, and a visit that only does the first one has not finished the job.

  • Find the source. Measuring where the leakage is coming from, appliance by appliance and circuit by circuit. This is instrument work, not guesswork.
  • Fix or condemn the faulty item. A geyser with a leaking element is usually an element replacement; a badly corroded one is a replacement unit. An appliance that keeps energising its body should not go back into service because it “works”.
  • Restore the protection. A working earth at that point, and an RCCB at the distribution board if there is not one. Ask directly: “after this, if it leaks again, what cuts the power?” If there is no clear answer, the job is not done.

Insist on a test of the earth itself, not just a visual check. Why am I getting a shock from my tap?

Can I fix an earthing problem myself?
No. Earthing is the one part of a home electrical system that is invisible when it fails, which is exactly why it must be tested with instruments by a professional rather than improvised. The common home remedies are all dangerous: connecting an appliance to a tap or a window grille, running a wire into the floor, or pouring water into an earth pit. Any of these can energise more metal in the flat rather than less. Everything you can safely do yourself is switching off, unplugging and observing.
What is an RCCB and do I need one if I get shocks?
An RCCB is a device at the distribution board that watches for current leaking out of a circuit and cuts the power in a fraction of a second when it does. It is the protection that is specifically meant to save a person, which ordinary MCBs do not do because they only guard the wiring against overload and short circuit. Many older Delhi flats have no RCCB at all. If you are getting shocks, ask the electrician both to find the leak and to make sure something will cut the power if it happens again.
My geyser body gives a shock. Should I replace the geyser?
Switch it off at the board first and stop using it, then have it diagnosed before deciding. A geyser that energises its body or the water usually has a failing heating element, and on many units that is a replaceable part rather than a whole new geyser. A tank that is heavily corroded, or a unit that has already had this fault once, is better replaced. Either way the earthing at that point must be checked too, because a working earth should have made this fault trip the supply instead of reaching you.
