A microwave that runs but does not heat has a working control side and a failed high-voltage side. Rule out the free causes first: a low power or grill-only setting, a demo mode left on, a door that is not latching, and a weak socket, then run a cup of water for a minute to confirm. Beyond that, stop, because the internal capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even unplugged, so the diagnosis of the magnetron, diode, fuse or interlock belongs to a technician.

A microwave that runs but does not heat is telling you something quite precise. The control side of the oven is fine — the timer, the door switch chain, the turntable motor, the cooling fan and the lamp are all working. What has failed is the part that actually produces microwave energy, or the high-voltage circuit that feeds it.

First, confirm it really is not heating

Do these three checks before assuming a fault. Each is free, and together they explain a fair share of complaints.

  • Run the cup test. Put a microwave-safe cup with about half a cup of water inside and run it on full power for one minute. If the water is warm, the oven is heating and the real complaint is power level, timing or the food. If the water is stone cold, it is a genuine no-heat fault.
  • Check the power level. Convection and grill models have several modes, and it is very easy to leave the oven on a low power level, on grill only, or on a defrost setting. Reset it to full microwave power and repeat the cup test.
  • Check for a demo or showroom mode. Many models sold in India have a display or demo mode that lets the panel and lamp operate with the magnetron disabled. It is meant for shop displays and gets switched on by accident. The manual will say how to exit it, usually a long press on a specific key.
  • Check the door closes fully. A door that is not latching properly, a bent hinge, or a damaged latch will stop the oven heating while everything else appears to work. Look at the latch hooks and the door frame for damage.
  • Check the socket. A microwave on a shared socket or a long extension can behave oddly when voltage drops. Plug it directly into a wall socket rated for it and try again.

What is actually broken when a microwave does not heat?

Assuming the checks above are clear, the fault is in the high-voltage side. Knowing the names helps you understand a quote, even though none of these is a home repair.

  • The magnetron. The component that generates the microwaves. It has a finite life and it is the single most common cause of a no-heat fault in an older oven. Replacing it is usually the most expensive individual part on a microwave, which is why age matters so much to the repair-or-replace decision.
  • The high-voltage capacitor or diode. These feed the magnetron. A failed diode is a very common cause and is far less costly than a magnetron. A technician can distinguish them; you cannot from the outside.
  • The high-voltage transformer. Less common, and generally on the expensive side to replace.
  • A blown thermal fuse or tripped thermal cut-out. These protect the oven from overheating, often after a blocked vent or after running it empty. Sometimes the fuse is the only fault; sometimes it blew because something else failed.
  • A failed door interlock switch. There are usually several in series. One failing in the right way can stop heating while the lamp and turntable still work. This is also a safety component, which is one more reason not to open the oven.
Watch out do not open the casing of a microwave — the internal capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the oven is unplugged, and the door interlocks and mesh screen are safety devices that must never be bypassed or improvised.

Is it worth repairing a microwave that will not heat?

  • Age is the biggest factor. On an oven well past its expected life, a magnetron replacement is rarely the last repair it will need. On a three-year-old oven, the same repair often makes clear sense.
  • Which part failed matters enormously. A diode or a thermal fuse is a modest job. A magnetron or transformer is a large fraction of what the oven is worth. Always ask the technician to name the part before they fit it, and to quote the part and the labour separately.
  • Convection and combi ovens change the maths. They cost more to begin with, so repair stays sensible for longer than on a basic solo microwave.
  • Rust inside the cavity changes everything. Rust on the cavity walls or around the door frame is a reason to replace rather than repair, because it affects the seal that keeps microwave energy inside.
  • Get the diagnosis in writing before agreeing. A no-heat fault has several possible causes at very different levels of effort. A technician who names the part is easier to compare than one who quotes a round figure for "repair".

What shortens a microwave’s life in Delhi

Three things come up again and again in Delhi kitchens.

  • Voltage fluctuation. The electronics in a microwave dislike dips and spikes as much as any other appliance board. If your area has an unstable supply, a good surge-protected socket and switching the oven off at the wall when not in use both help. Do not run a microwave on an inverter unless the inverter is genuinely rated for it — see our power cut and inverter tips.
  • Blocked ventilation. Microwaves are often squeezed into a cabinet cut-out or pushed against a wall with a tray of things on top. The vents on the side and back need clear air, and an oven that overheats trips its thermal fuse. Leave a clear gap on all sides.
  • Grease and dust. Cooking splatter combined with fine Delhi dust builds a crust inside the cavity and blocks the vents. Wipe the cavity, the ceiling of the oven and the waveguide cover regularly, and do not let the vents cake up. A steamed bowl of water for a couple of minutes softens baked-on splatter before wiping.
  • Running it empty. With nothing inside to absorb the energy, the magnetron takes the load itself. This is one of the few things that genuinely kills a microwave in one go.

What to have ready when you call a technician

These details usually decide whether the visit is one trip or two.

  • The brand and the exact model number, from the sticker on the back or inside the door frame.
  • Whether it is a solo, grill or convection model.
  • The result of the cup test — cold water or slightly warm water are different faults.
  • Whether anything else is odd: a buzzing sound, a burning smell, the MCB tripping, the display flashing a code.
  • Roughly how old it is, and whether it is still in warranty.

Why is my microwave heating slowly instead of not at all?
Slow heating is a different symptom from no heating and often has a simpler cause. Does running a microwave empty damage it?
Yes, and it is one of the few things that can damage a microwave in a single incident. Microwave energy needs something to absorb it, and with an empty cavity the magnetron effectively takes the load back onto itself.
