The arithmetic — do it before you sign

It is a two-minute sum and it settles the question for your specific unit.

• Count your pre-filters. Most domestic units have two or three sediment and carbon filters that need changing once or twice a year. Multiply the per-filter range by how many, by how often.
• Add the services. Two visits a year at the general service rate.
• Add a share of the membrane. A membrane lasts a few years with well-maintained pre-filters, so divide its cost across those years rather than counting it every year.
• Compare that total with the with-filters AMC. For a normally used purifier on typical Delhi water, the two usually land close enough that the deciding factor is convenience, not money.

Where an AMC clearly wins: high-TDS or silty supply, where filters choke faster than the schedule; a household that will otherwise forget; a unit past warranty that is starting to need attention. Where it clearly loses: a nearly new purifier under manufacturer warranty, or a lightly used one in a small household.

Six questions before you sign anything

• “How many visits, and are they scheduled or on call?” Three or four a year is typical. Get the number written down.
• “Which parts are included and which are excluded?” Ask specifically about the membrane, the UV lamp, the pump and the SMPS — these are the four that matter, and the exclusions list is where the real terms live.
• “Are breakdown call-outs covered, or only the scheduled visits?” A plan that only covers the calendar is worth much less in a year when something fails.
• “What is the response time?” A water purifier that is down for a week in May is not a small inconvenience.
• “Are the filters branded or generic, and will you show me the packaging?” A perfectly fair question, and the answer tells you a lot.
• “What happens if I move?” Relocation within Delhi NCR is common; find out whether it is covered or extra.

Make the contract work for you

• Take a TDS reading at every visit — input and output — and write both down with the date. Over a year this is the only objective record of whether the unit is doing its job, and it settles any argument about the membrane in a minute. TDS testing is a small charge on its own.
• Keep the filter-change dates. A photo of the sticker or a note on your phone. It is what stops a filter being “changed” twice in the same year and never in the next.
• Ask them to sanitise the storage tank. Many will if asked and skip it if not. It is the part of the system that holds treated water for days.
• Do not let the pre-filters slide to save money. They are the cheap parts that protect the expensive one — skipping them is how a membrane dies early, which is precisely the cost an AMC was meant to avoid.
