Texture is almost always an accent wall decision, and that is the single most useful thing to know before reading any quote. People see a per-square-foot rate several times higher than ordinary emulsion and assume the room is unaffordable — but one feature wall in a bedroom is a small area, and the total is usually far less alarming than the rate suggests.
The other thing to understand is why quotes vary so much. “Texture” covers everything from a simple roller-applied pattern to hand-applied metallic and stucco finishes that are closer to craft than to painting. The rate depends almost entirely on which end of that you are asking for, and on how much of the price is skilled hand-work.

The texture row is wide because it spans simple roller patterns at one end and hand-applied designer finishes at the other. Establish which you are being quoted for.

Texture is priced on the area being textured, not the room. So work out the actual wall.
- Width × height in feet. A typical Delhi bedroom feature wall behind the bed is roughly 12×10 ft — about 120 sq ft.
- Subtract windows and doors in that wall. Ask whether the quote does; some quote gross area, which on a wall with a large window is a meaningful difference.
- A living room TV wall is often 10–14 ft wide, so 100–150 sq ft.
- Whole rooms in texture are rare and expensive for a reason. Four walls of a 12×14 room is roughly 500–550 sq ft of wall, and at texture rates that is a different conversation entirely.

What has to be underneath
Texture is unforgiving of a poor base — and in some finishes it actually magnifies flaws rather than hiding them, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
- The wall must be dry. Not “probably fine” — dry. Applying an expensive finish over a wall with damp behind it is the most expensive mistake available in this category, because the finish fails and the repair means taking it off. - Putty, then primer. Two coats of putty for a smooth, level base, then primer. Some heavy stucco finishes need less preparation; most designer finishes need more, not less.
- Old paint that is flaking must come off, not be covered.
- Ask for a sample patch. A square foot on the actual wall, in the actual light. Texture looks completely different at scale and under Delhi's afternoon light versus a showroom sample board — this is the single most useful thing you can insist on.
Getting a quote you can hold someone to
- Name the finish, not the category. “Texture” is not a specification. Get the product and the pattern named on the quote.
- Establish with or without material. The single biggest reason two quotes differ. Designer finish products are expensive, so this is not a small distinction here.
- Get putty, primer and finish itemised separately. A single lump figure hides whether preparation is properly costed — and preparation is what gets cut when a quote is squeezed.
- Ask who has done this finish before. Hand-applied designer work is a skill, not a task. It is entirely fair to ask to see photographs of previous work.
- Time it for the dry months. October to March. Texture layers need to dry properly between coats, and Delhi's monsoon does not allow that. Our timing guide covers the season.
