1. Get the dust out without taking them down
- Vacuum them in place with the upholstery brush, top to bottom, every couple of weeks. Two minutes per window and it removes most of what a wash would.
- Shake them out at an open window on a still day, or from the balcony. Do it before you vacuum, not after.

The commonest curtain disaster in Delhi is a pair that came back from the wash two inches short.
- Check the label first. Cotton and linen shrink; many lined and blackout curtains should not be machine washed at all, because the lining and the face fabric shrink at different rates and the curtain puckers permanently.
- Cold water and a gentle cycle for anything you are washing at home.
- Hang them damp, straight back onto the rod. The weight pulls the creases out and you avoid ironing something enormous. This is the single most useful trick here.
- Never tumble dry lined curtains.
- Wash one pair at a time so a room is not left bare for a day.
- Take heavy, lined or silk curtains to a dry cleaner. The cost is small against replacing them, and this is the category where home washing goes wrong.
- Wash before the season changes — after the dusty stretch, not during it.
3. Blinds need different treatment
- Venetian blinds: close them one way, wipe with a damp microfibre cloth, then close the other way and repeat. Doing both sides is the whole job, and it is what people miss.
- Roller blinds: unroll fully and vacuum or wipe. Rolling a dusty blind up traps the dust in the roll and it comes back down with it.
- Do not soak fabric roller blinds. Many have a stiffening treatment that water removes, after which they never hang flat again.
- Keep the mechanism clean and unlubricated with oil — Delhi dust turns oil into paste. Use a dry silicone spray if anything binds.
- Do not force a blind that has jammed. The cord and spring mechanisms are what break, and they break under force.
- Cordless or tied-off cords with small children. Loose looped cords are a genuine hazard; a cleat on the wall costs almost nothing.
4. Choosing for a Delhi window
- West-facing rooms need light colours with a pale lining. Reflecting the heat outward beats absorbing it inward, and the room is measurably cooler for it — our summer cooling tips cover the wider version.
- Delhi sun fades fabric fast. Anything dark or richly coloured at a sunny window will go patchy, and it fades where the light lands rather than evenly. Rotating panels between windows once a year helps.
- Two layers work well here — a sheer for daytime privacy with the window open, a heavier curtain for heat and night. It is also more flexible than one compromise fabric.

- Check the rod can carry it before buying heavy lined curtains. A rod that bows in the middle needed a centre bracket, and a fixing pulling out of a wall takes plaster with it.
