Small Home Repairs Worth Fixing Early in Delhi

1. Any damp patch — fix the cause now

This is the clearest example on the list. A damp patch never stays a damp patch. It spreads into plaster, lifts paint, gets into POP, reaches wiring in the wall, and in a Delhi monsoon it does all of that in weeks rather than years.

The important part is finding the cause before painting over it. A leaking pipe, a failed terrace membrane and external seepage look identical on the inside and have completely different fixes. 2. A dripping tap is cheap; a running one is not

• A dripping tap is usually a washer or cartridge — small, quick, and it can wait a few weeks without consequence.
• A tap that runs when closed, or a cistern that never stops filling, is different. In a city where water is metered or tanked, that is measurable waste, and a continuously wet surface eventually damages what is under it.
• Any leak inside a wall or under a sink cabinet goes to the top of the list. Water you cannot see is water you will discover as a swollen cabinet base or a stain on the neighbour’s ceiling.

3. Electrical faults are never the “wait and see” kind

Almost everything else on this page can wait a little. These cannot.

• A socket or switch that is warm, browning, buzzing or sparking. Stop using it and get it looked at.
• An MCB that trips repeatedly. It is protecting you from something. Find out what — our tripping MCB guide covers the diagnosis. Never fit a bigger breaker to stop it.

• A flickering light that is not the bulb. Usually a loose connection, which is a heat risk.

4. Doors, hinges and swollen wood

• A door that has started catching is usually a hinge screw working loose, and at that stage it is a five-minute job. Left alone, the door’s own weight enlarges the screw holes in the frame, and then it becomes a repair rather than an adjustment. See our sticking door guide.
• Swollen wood after monsoon often settles on its own as humidity drops. Planing it down in August can leave a gap in December — worth waiting a few weeks before cutting anything.
• A drawer or wardrobe channel that is stiff is cheap now and a broken carcass later.

5. And the ones that genuinely can wait

Being honest about this matters as much as the rest, because treating everything as urgent is its own kind of expensive.

• Cosmetic paint marks and scuffs — batch them into your next repaint.
• A single slow-draining basin where the others are fine. Usually a trap that needs clearing.
• A squeaky hinge. Oil it.
• A loose switch plate that is otherwise sound — but not a warm one.
• Grout discolouration without any damp behind it.
