Ten Ways to Spend Less on Home Repairs in Delhi

1. Batch small jobs into one visit

The largest and easiest saving available. On a small job, most of what you pay is the visit — the travel across Delhi, the time, the trip. The work itself is often the smaller part.

Keep a running note on your phone. A dripping tap today, a loose switch next week, a sticking door after that: called separately, that is three visits. Written down and booked together, it is one afternoon. Our day-rate guide covers when booking a whole day beats booking by the job.

2. Book before the season, not during it

• AC servicing in February or March, not May. From late April, good technicians are genuinely hard to get within a week, and you end up deciding about your AC in a 42°C room — which is a poor negotiating position and everyone knows it.
• Waterproofing before the monsoon, not during the first leak.
• Pest control as the rains establish, before numbers peak.
• Painting between October and March, when it can actually dry.

3. Buy the parts and fixtures yourself

• You will usually pay less than a marked-up supply price, and you choose the quality rather than accepting whatever is in the van.
• The warranty is in your name, with your receipt.
• Ask for a labour-only quote against parts you supply. It also makes two quotes genuinely comparable, because material choice stops being a hidden variable.
• The exception is consumables a professional buys better than you can — small fittings, sealant, wire. Not worth the errand.

4. Describe the job precisely when you book

A professional who knows what they are coming to arrives with the right parts. One who does not either guesses or comes back — and a second visit costs you the visit again.

• Say the model, the room, and what exactly is happening. “Front-load washing machine, will not drain, water sitting in the drum” is worth far more than “washing machine problem”.
• Send a photo or a short video. Almost nobody does this and it is the single most useful thing you can send.
• Mention access issues up front — fourth floor, no lift, narrow stairs. Finding out on arrival is what turns a quote into a renegotiation.

5. Rule out the cheap cause before buying the expensive fix

The most expensive repairs are the ones sold for symptoms that had a cheaper cause. A few worth knowing:

• Weak AC cooling is far more often a dirty filter or coil than low gas. Our gas refill guide covers how to tell.

• A tripping MCB is usually a fault on the circuit, not a bad breaker.

6. Quote first, payment last

• Get the quote before work starts, with labour and materials separated. Work that begins before a price is agreed is how bills grow.
• Never pay the full amount up front. A material advance on a large job is normal; paying all the labour before it is done is not.
• For anything over a day, write the scope down — a list on WhatsApp that you both agreed is enough, and it is the best protection against a job that keeps expanding.
