A sofa, a rug and a mattress hold more dust than every hard surface in a Delhi flat put together, and they give it back to the room every time someone sits down or turns over. That is the practical case for looking after them — a lower dust load in the air you breathe, and furnishings that last.
Most of what follows is free. The professional clean is a periodic reset, not a substitute for any of it.
One note first. XpertWorker is a marketplace, not a service company. We do not set any professional’s price and we never charge you. When a job below needs a professional, you choose an independent local one who quotes you free and whom you pay directly.
In this guide
1. Vacuum properly — it is the whole game
Grit is what destroys upholstery and carpet. It works down into the fibres and then cuts them every time weight moves across, which is why a neglected rug goes thin in the traffic lanes before it goes dirty.
- Slowly, and more than once over. A quick pass lifts surface fluff. Several slow passes in different directions lift what is actually in there. This is the difference between vacuuming and appearing to vacuum.
- Weekly for anything in a traffic lane, and near a window or balcony door where Delhi dust arrives.
- Under the cushions, not just over them. Lift them out; do the crevices and the frame beneath.
- Vacuum the mattress when you change the sheets. Two minutes, and it is the single most neglected surface in the house.
- Empty the vacuum often. A full bag or bin drops the suction long before it looks full.

- Blot, do not rub. Rubbing pushes the spill deeper and frays the fibre. Press a clean dry cloth down and lift.
- Work from the outside in so you do not spread the edge outward.
- Cold water first, for most things. Hot water sets protein stains — milk, egg, blood — permanently.
- Test any cleaner somewhere hidden before using it where it shows. Under a cushion, the back corner of the rug.
- Do not soak it. Water that gets into the foam or the backing takes days to dry in Delhi humidity, and what comes next is a smell.
- Then dry it fast — fan on it, window open. A damp patch left overnight in monsoon is the actual problem, not the original spill.
3. Rotate the mattress, and check what is under it
- Rotate head-to-foot every few months. It evens out the wear and is the cheapest thing you can do for how long a mattress lasts. Only flip it if it is a double-sided mattress — most modern ones are not, and flipping those puts the comfort layer underneath.
- Use a washable mattress protector. It is far easier to wash a protector than to clean a mattress, and it prevents most of what would need cleaning.
- Let it breathe. Pull the covers back for an hour in the morning instead of making the bed immediately. Overnight moisture needs somewhere to go, and this matters in monsoon.
- Check the base. A box or divan base with no ventilation traps humidity underneath. Lift it occasionally and look, particularly if the bed sits against an outside wall.
- Know the difference between dirt and bed bugs. Dark specks along the seams, small blood spots on the sheet, or bites in a line are a pest problem, not a cleaning one — see our bed bugs guide.
4. Sun, rotation, and when to book the professional clean
- Keep upholstery out of direct afternoon sun. Delhi sun fades fabric fast and makes leather and rexine brittle and crack. A sheer curtain on a west-facing window is worth more than it costs.
- Rotate the rug a couple of times a year so the traffic lane moves and the fading is even.
- Rotate loose sofa cushions for the same reason.
- Book the professional clean once a year for a normally used sofa and rug, or twice if you have pets, small children or a road-facing flat. The right time is at the end of the dusty stretch, so the reset lasts.
- Ask about drying, not just cleaning. Extraction method and drying time matter more in Delhi than the shampoo does — our mattress and carpet guide covers the question to ask.
- Say if a rug is silk, wool or handmade. Those are dry-clean items; a wet clean can bleed the dyes or shrink the backing.
Our sofa cleaning guide covers upholstery pricing, and our dust tips cover keeping the load down everywhere else.
