Why Did My Electricity Bill Suddenly Jump This Month?

A bill that jumps sharply feels like a mistake, and the first instinct is almost always the same: the meter must be running fast. Occasionally that is true. Far more often the explanation is sitting on the bill itself, in a line nobody reads, or in something that changed at home without anyone counting it.

This page is a diagnosis, not a savings guide. The question here is narrow: why is this month different from last month? Work through it in order — the bill first, the household second, the meter last — because that is roughly the order of likelihood, and because raising a complaint before you have checked the first two wastes weeks.

What is safe to do yourself. Reading your bill, comparing readings, photographing the meter, switching appliances off and watching the meter are all fine. Never open, unseal, move or interfere with the meter — it belongs to the distribution company, tampering is a serious offence, and the connections behind it are live. Step one: read the bill properly before anything else

Most “impossible” bills are explained here, and it costs nothing but five minutes. Compare this bill side by side with the last two.

  • How many days does it cover? Billing periods are not always equal. A bill covering a noticeably longer stretch than the last one is naturally larger, and that alone explains many jumps.
  • Is the reading actual or estimated? Bills are usually marked. If a previous bill was estimated on the low side, the next actual reading catches up all at once and looks like a spike. Nothing is wrong; the units were simply billed late.
  • Do the meter readings line up? Take the closing reading on the last bill and the closing reading on this one. The difference is the units billed. Then go and look at the meter today and check that the current number is consistent. If the opening reading on this bill does not match the closing reading on the last, that alone is worth raising.
  • Are there arrears or a previous balance rolled in? An unpaid or partly paid amount from an earlier bill appears again and makes this one look enormous.
  • Have fixed charges or the sanctioned load changed? Part of a bill is charged on connected load rather than usage, so a load enhancement done for a new AC changes every future bill even in months you use nothing extra.
  • Has any rebate, subsidy or category status lapsed or changed? Eligibility conditions and category classifications change, and a bill that quietly stops carrying a concession looks like a usage spike when it is not.
  • Is it a new or replaced meter? After a meter change the readings restart, and the transition bill is a common source of confusion.

Step two: what changed in the house?

Consumption is dominated by a handful of things that heat, cool or run a motor. Everything else is noise. Go through this list honestly.

  • Air conditioning hours. The single biggest variable in a Delhi home. An AC that moves from four hours a night to running all night, or a second room that started using its AC, changes a bill more than every light and charger in the flat combined. Compare with the same month last year, not with last month.
  • The geyser, in winter. The counterpart of the AC. A geyser left switched on all day instead of being run for a few minutes before a bath is one of the commonest winter jumps in Delhi.
  • Room heaters and blowers in smog season. Anything that makes heat uses a lot, and heaters are usually bought in a cold snap and then run far more than intended.
  • More people at home. Guests, a child home for holidays, someone working from home instead of an office. Occupancy drives everything else.
  • A new appliance. A second fridge, a dishwasher, a clothes dryer, an aquarium pump, a treadmill, or a desktop computer left running around the clock.
  • The water motor running longer. If the supply pressure dropped or a tank overflow float failed, a pump can run for hours unnoticed. This is a genuinely common and completely invisible cause.

  • A failing appliance working harder. A fridge with a dirty condenser or worn door seal, an AC low on gas, a geyser element caked with hard-water scale. All of them run longer for the same result.

Weather matters too. A hotter or longer summer than the previous year moves the whole household up without anyone changing a habit.

Why a small rise in units causes a big rise in the bill

This surprises people every summer and it is worth understanding, because it makes a modest change in usage look like a billing error.

Domestic electricity in Delhi is billed in slabs. The units you consume are divided into bands, and each band is charged at its own rate, with higher bands charged at higher rates. So consumption does not scale in a straight line: once your usage climbs past a slab boundary, the extra units are charged at the higher band rate, and the bill rises faster than the units did.

Two practical consequences:

  • The first real month of AC season always looks disproportionate. A household that was comfortably inside a lower slab all winter crosses into higher bands in May, and the bill grows more than the usage did.
  • Comparing May to April tells you very little. Compare May to last May. That is the only comparison that isolates a genuine change from the normal seasonal shape.

Any concession or subsidy tied to a consumption threshold behaves the same way — crossing the limit can remove the benefit for the entire bill, which is why a small increase in units sometimes produces a startling increase in the amount due. Check the applicable slabs and conditions on your own discom’s current tariff schedule rather than relying on what a neighbour tells you.

Step three: the safe self-test on your own meter

Only after the first two steps. This is free, takes about half an hour, and involves nothing more than switches and looking at the meter.

  • 1. Note the reading and photograph it. Do this on the same day each week for a few weeks. A weekly reading log is the single most useful thing you can hand to anybody, and it turns arguments into arithmetic.
  • 2. Switch off everything in the flat at the distribution board except what you cannot avoid, and unplug the obvious standby items. Then watch the meter’s blinking indicator. A digital meter usually flashes a small light in proportion to consumption.
  • 3. With genuinely nothing running, the flashing should be very slow or stop. If it keeps blinking steadily with the whole flat switched off, that is a real finding and worth reporting to the discom.
  • 4. Switch circuits back on one at a time and watch how the rate changes. You will quickly see which circuit dominates. Often it is the one with the water motor or the geyser on it.
  • 5. Check whether a neighbour, a shop or a common-area load is on your meter. In older Delhi buildings, shared corridor lights, a common water pump, a lift or a tenant’s extension are sometimes fed from a flat’s connection, often decades ago and forgotten. If your meter runs with your flat switched off, this is one of the likely reasons.
  • 6. Compare with a similar neighbour. Same size flat, same family size, same number of ACs. A large unexplained gap is evidence worth having.
Watch out Never open, unseal, bypass or interfere with the meter, and never let anyone offer to “adjust” it. The meter is the distribution company’s property, tampering is a criminal offence, and the terminals behind it are live.

Who to approach: the discom or an electrician?

These are two different problems and sending them to the wrong person costs time.

Go to your distribution company if the issue is the bill or the meter itself: a reading that does not match your meter, an estimated bill that never got corrected, arrears you have already paid, a category or subsidy question, a meter that runs with the flat switched off, or a suspected faulty meter. Discoms have a defined process for meter testing and for billing disputes. Put it in writing, attach dated photographs of the meter, and keep the complaint number.

Call an independent electrician if the issue is inside your flat: a water motor that runs far longer than it should, a suspected leakage somewhere in the wiring, a circuit you cannot account for, or a connection you think may be feeding something outside the flat. An electrician can also measure what individual appliances are actually drawing, which settles arguments about a suspect geyser or fridge quickly.

The clue is a battery that also gives noticeably shorter backup than it used to. Have it load tested rather than guessed at, and check the electrolyte level and terminals while you are there.
