There is one situation where a spark at a plug point is ordinary, and every other situation is a fault. The ordinary one is narrow: a single brief blue flash at the exact instant you push a plug into a socket, or the instant you switch on something with a heavy load — a geyser, an iron, an AC, a motor. That flash is the small arc that forms as the contacts meet and the current jumps the last fraction of a millimetre. It happens once, it is over instantly, and nothing is left behind: no smell, no mark, no heat, no crackle.
Anything else is a fault. A spark you can watch rather than glimpse, a spark that happens every time, a spark from a switch being operated normally, a spark accompanied by a crack or a buzz, a spark with the smell of hot plastic, sparking while nothing is being plugged in at all, or any scorching, blackening or heat — all of these mean electricity is finding a path it should not have, and the energy is going into heat exactly where the wiring meets the plastic.
That is why this page is short on diagnosis and firm on action. The point of the fault does not matter to you nearly as much as the fact that a loose or arcing connection is one of the commonest starting points for a domestic electrical fire, and it does not repair itself.
Where the DIY line is on this page — and it is a short line. Safe: switching the circuit off at your distribution board, unplugging an appliance by its body, looking, smelling, and keeping the point out of use. Nothing else. Do not remove or open the switch plate or socket faceplate, do not tighten a terminal, do not tape it over and carry on, do not test it with another appliance to see whether it does it again, and do not let an untrained helper take the plate off. What to do right now, before anything else
Five steps, all free, all safe, and all done without touching the point itself. Do them in this order.
- 1. Switch the point off at the wall. Use the switch beside the socket if there is one. Do not pull a plug out of a socket that is actively sparking, crackling or smoking — switch off first.
- 2. Switch that circuit off at the distribution board. Go to your board and turn off the MCB covering that room or that circuit. Operating an MCB is a normal user action and is safe; opening the board is not, and you should not. If you cannot identify the right MCB, switch off the main. In a shared or unlabelled board, it is worth switching off the main rather than guessing wrong and leaving the faulty point live.
- 3. Unplug the appliance that was in it, once the power is off, and hold it by the plug body rather than the cable. Look at the plug pins: pitting, blackening or a melted, distorted plug tells you a great deal, and it also means that appliance and its plug should not be used in another socket until they have been checked.
- 4. Stop using that point, and make sure the household knows. Stick a piece of paper over it or tape the switch. This matters more than it sounds — the usual sequence is that everyone agrees to avoid the socket, and then somebody uses it “just for the fan tonight” a day later.
- 5. Call an electrician. Today if there is any smell, mark or heat. Very soon otherwise. Nothing about a sparking point improves while you wait.

Sometimes, and this is the only case where it is. Knowing the difference stops both unnecessary panic and, more importantly, dangerous complacency.
Ordinary arcing looks like this. You push a plug into a socket, or press the switch on something heavy, and there is a single small blue flash inside the socket at the moment of contact. It is instantaneous. There is no sound beyond a faint tick, no smell, no visible mark, and the socket is cool afterwards. It happens because the current begins to flow across a tiny gap just before the contacts fully meet, and the bigger the load, the more likely you are to see it. A geyser, an iron, an AC, a microwave or a motor is far more likely to produce it than a phone charger.
A fault looks like any of these. If you can tick even one, stop using the point.
- The spark is visible for more than an instant, or you see repeated sparking, flickering or a glow rather than one flash.
- It happens every single time, or it has started happening where it never used to. A change is the signal.
- A switch sparks when you operate it normally, with nothing being plugged in. A light switch or a fan switch should not spark visibly at all.
- There is a crack, pop, buzz or continuous fizzing sound. Sound means energy, and sustained sound means sustained arcing.
- There is a smell — hot plastic, burning, or a sharp electrical smell like the air after a storm.
- Anything is warm. The plate, the plug, the cable near the plug, or the wall around the point. A socket in use should be cool.
- There are marks. Brown or black staining around the pin holes, a yellowed or bubbled plate, melted plastic, or a sooty smear on the wall above.
- It sparks with nothing plugged in, or sparks as you merely touch or lean on the plate. That is loose live metal behind the plate.

- Anyone has felt a tingle or a shock from the appliance, the plate or the plug. Read getting a shock from a tap or appliance and treat it as urgent.
The usual fault: loose terminals and worn socket contacts
When a switch or socket sparks for real, the cause is nearly always one of two things, and both are about a connection that is no longer tight. You do not need to find out which; you need to recognise the symptoms so you can describe them.
- A loose terminal behind the plate. The wire is held under a small screw inside the switch or socket. Heating and cooling every day, ordinary vibration, an aluminium conductor that creeps under pressure, or simply a screw that was never tightened properly at installation, all let that screw slacken over years. Once the wire is loose, current arcs across the tiny gap continuously while the point is in use. That arcing produces heat, the heat degrades the terminal further, and the fault accelerates. It is the classic cause of a warm plate, a faint burning smell and eventually a scorched socket.
- Worn socket contacts. Inside a socket, springy metal contacts grip the plug pins. After years of plugs going in and out — and especially with cheap sockets, or with heavy appliances moved between points — those contacts lose their springiness. The plug then sits loosely and the contact area is small, so it arcs and heats up. The everyday tells are a plug that feels loose or drops out under the weight of its own cable, a plug that has to be wiggled to make the appliance work, an appliance that flickers or cuts out if the cable is nudged, and a plug that is warm when you unplug it.
- A bad plug or a damaged cable. Sometimes the point is fine and the fault is the appliance’s own plug — pins pitted, plug body cracked, cable pulled hard at the entry so a strand has broken. If the same appliance sparks in more than one socket, suspect the plug. Do not keep testing it in other sockets, because each test can damage a good socket.
- Aged switchboards. In older Delhi flats, decades-old switches and sockets with worn contacts and brittle terminals are extremely common, and often the whole board is at the same stage rather than one point being unlucky. If more than one point in the flat has misbehaved, read the signs house wiring needs replacing.
Note what all of that has in common: a small gap where there should be a tight joint, turning electricity into heat inside a plastic box in your wall. That is the reason for the firmness of this page. Also note that none of it is visible from the front. A socket that has been quietly cooking its own terminal for a year looks perfectly normal until it does not.
Overloaded points, extension boards and monsoon moisture
Three causes that are specific to how Delhi homes are actually used, and all three are worth checking because they change what needs to be done.
- A heavy appliance on a light-duty point. Sockets are made in different current ratings, and the small pin points fitted throughout older flats were intended for lamps, fans and televisions. Running a geyser, an iron, a microwave, an induction hob, an AC or a water motor from one of those, through an adaptor, is a very common cause of a sparking, warm and eventually scorched socket. If the appliance is heavy, the answer is usually a properly rated dedicated point rather than a repair to the existing one.
- Extension boards and adaptors, stacked. An extension board plugged into another extension board, an adaptor carrying three plugs, or a cheap board with thin cable carrying an iron are all ways to concentrate a large load on one weak connection. - Moisture. Delhi’s monsoon humidity, seepage through an outside wall, a leaking pipe in a shared wall, splash near a kitchen sink or a washing machine, a balcony point exposed to driven rain, or condensation and drip from an AC. Damp inside a switchboard causes tracking, where current creeps across a damp surface and carbonises it, leaving a permanent conductive path that arcs even after everything has dried. The signs are a damp patch, a stain or blistered paint near the board, or sparking that started in the rains. Points near water need the right kind of enclosure, which is a conversation to have with the electrician.

Repeated deep sags and spikes stress connections and accelerate the wear described above, and a surge when the supply is restored after a long cut can be the moment a marginal connection finally fails. If sparking appeared at more than one point, or after a renovation, an AC installation or new appliances, the honest question is whether the circuit is carrying more than it was built for. That is a load question, not a socket question, and it needs someone to look at the board and the circuit rather than the plate.
Scorching, burning smells and when to call — what to tell them
Call an electrician the same day if there is any burning or hot-plastic smell, any brown, black or melted marking on a plate, any warmth in a plate or the wall behind it, any smoke, any continuous buzzing or crackling, any sparking with nothing plugged in, or if anyone has felt a shock or tingle. Keep the circuit off at the board until they arrive. These are not wait-and-see symptoms.
Call soon, with the point out of use, if the sparking is visible but there is no smell or mark yet, if a plug fits loosely or has to be wiggled, if the same point has sparked more than once, or if the point is old and heavily used.
What to tell them, so they arrive with the right parts. A good description turns a two-visit job into one:
- Whether it is a switch or a socket, which room, and roughly how old the switchboard is.
- Whether it sparks on plugging in, on switching on, continuously, or with nothing plugged in at all.
- What was plugged in at the time, and its rating if you can read it from the appliance label.
- Whether there is a smell, warmth, marking or sound — and take a photograph of the plate and of the plug pins.
- Whether the MCB or RCCB tripped, and whether other points on the same circuit have behaved oddly.
- Whether it began after rain, seepage, a renovation, an AC installation or a new appliance.
- Whether more than one point in the flat is affected — that changes the job from replacing an accessory to inspecting a circuit.
What a fair repair looks like. The electrician isolates the circuit at the board, opens the accessory, and inspects the terminals and the conductor ends for heat damage. A heat-damaged socket or switch is replaced rather than retightened, because the burnt terminal and the softened plastic do not recover. If the conductor itself is damaged where it was overheating, the tail may need remaking. They should also check the rest of the points on that circuit, because the same installer and the same age usually mean the same problem next door. Ask to see the old accessory and the state of the terminals; there is nothing to hide in this job.
