Wall & Paint Care Tips for a Delhi Home

1. Clean marks without taking the paint off

Most walls are ruined by cleaning rather than by the mark.

• Test in a corner first, always. Behind a door or below the switchboard.
• Damp cloth, mild soap, light pressure. Work from the outside of the mark inwards so you do not spread it.
• Never scrub. On anything other than a premium washable emulsion, scrubbing burnishes a shiny patch that is more visible than the original mark.
• Know what you have. Distemper cannot be washed at all. Standard emulsion tolerates a gentle wipe. Only washable grades take real cleaning.
• Keep the leftover paint from your last repaint, labelled by room. A dab on a scuff is invisible; a patch mixed two years later never quite matches.

2. Catch damp before it becomes a repaint

Paint does not fail on its own nearly as often as it fails because of what is behind it. Learn the three early signs.

• A faint tide mark low on an external wall, or high near a ceiling corner.
• Paint that feels slightly cool or soft in one patch compared to the wall around it.
• Fine bubbling — moisture pushing from behind. Once it flakes, the plaster underneath is already affected.

3. Time a repaint for the weather

• Avoid the monsoon. High humidity slows drying, and paint applied onto a wall that has not fully dried is paint that will not hold. This applies double to exterior work.
• October to March is the comfortable window in Delhi — dry enough to cure, not so hot that the surface skins before it levels.
• Peak summer works indoors but a wall in direct afternoon sun dries too fast, which shows as roller marks and patchy sheen.

4. Protect the four places paint always goes first

• Behind sofas and beds. Constant contact leaves a dark band. A centimetre of gap from the wall prevents it entirely.
• Around switches and handles. The commonest marks in any home and the easiest to wipe early.
• The kitchen wall near the hob. Grease bonds to paint over time. Wipe it while warm; see our chimney care tips, since the two problems share a cause.
• The wall that gets afternoon sun. It will fade faster than the other three, which is why a single-wall touch-up rarely matches. Plan repaints by room, not by wall.

5. Before you book a repaint

• Fix the water first. Every time. Painting over damp is money spent twice.

• Keep a labelled tin of each colour when the job is done. It is the cheapest maintenance decision in the whole project.
