You run the AC through a Delhi night and by morning the room feels arid. Lips feel tight, the laundry on the chair is bone dry, a glass of water left out has dropped noticeably. Nothing is broken. This is the machine doing what it does.
Here is the mechanism in one line. An air conditioner cools by blowing room air across a coil that is well below room temperature, and moisture in that air condenses on the cold metal and runs away down the drain pipe. That water dripping outside your window is the humidity that used to be in your room. Cooling and drying are not two separate functions — they are the same process.
What makes it noticeable in Delhi is the season. Through the dry pre-monsoon weeks the outdoor air is already low in moisture, so a room that is being dried further by an AC can get very dry indeed. Once the monsoon arrives the same AC on the same setting feels far less drying, because it is pulling from much wetter air.

First: what to change tonight, for free
All of these cost nothing and you can try them this evening. In rough order of how much difference they make.
- 1. Raise the set temperature. This is the biggest lever by a distance. The colder you ask the coil to get, the more moisture condenses out of the room air. Moving from a very low setting to a moderate one means the compressor runs less, the coil spends less time very cold, and far less water goes down the drain. - 2. Raise the fan speed. A higher fan speed with a moderate set temperature keeps the coil warmer while still moving plenty of air. A very low fan speed with a very low set temperature is the combination that dries a room hardest — and it is also the combination that ices coils.
- 3. Come out of dry or dehumidify mode. That mode exists specifically to pull moisture out of the air, which is exactly what you are complaining about. It has a place in a sticky monsoon week and no place in dry May. Check which mode the display is showing.
- 4. Use a timer or sleep mode overnight. Set the AC to switch off, or step its temperature up, a few hours after you sleep. Delhi nights cool a little towards morning, and the last stretch of running is usually the least needed and the most drying.
- 5. Try fan mode for part of the evening. Fan-only moves air without cooling and without condensing anything out. On a merely warm evening rather than a fierce one it is often enough, and it removes no moisture at all.
- 6. Stop over-sealing the room. A room that is never aired keeps recycling the same increasingly dry air. Opening up for a while when the outdoor air is reasonable resets it.
Try these for two or three nights before buying anything. Most people find the set temperature and fan speed alone change how the room feels by morning.

Because cooling air and drying air are the same action. Understanding this stops you looking for a fault that is not there.
- Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. When room air is blown across a coil that is much colder than the room, the air right at the metal cannot hold what it was carrying, and the excess condenses into liquid water on the fins — the same way a cold bottle sweats on a June afternoon.
- That water leaves the building. It runs off the fins into the drain pan under the coil and out through the drain pipe. The steady drip outside your window while the AC runs is your room’s humidity being thrown away.
- The colder the coil, the more it takes. A low set temperature keeps the compressor running longer and the coil colder for more of the time, so more moisture is removed per hour. This is why the thermostat setting is the strongest control you have.
- Slow air across a cold coil dries hardest. Air lingering on very cold metal gives up more of its moisture than air rushing past. That is exactly why dry mode deliberately runs the fan slowly, and why a low fan speed makes a room feel drier.
- A ceiling fan does not dry anything. Moving air makes you feel cooler without changing the room’s moisture at all. Running a ceiling fan alongside the AC on a higher set temperature is one of the better trades available in a Delhi bedroom.
None of this is a malfunction, and no repair removes it. An AC that was not removing moisture would be an AC that was not cooling.
Why it is worse in May than in August
The season decides how dry an air-conditioned room gets, and Delhi has two very different halves to its cooling season.
- The dry pre-monsoon weeks. Through the fiercest heat before the rains, the outdoor air itself is low in moisture. Your AC starts from dry air and dries it further, so this is when rooms feel most parched by morning. It is also when people set the coldest temperatures, which compounds it.
- The monsoon weeks. Once the rains arrive the outdoor air is heavy with moisture, fresh air leaks into the flat carrying that moisture with it, and the AC is working against a constant resupply. Rooms rarely feel dry then — the complaint flips to stickiness, and dry mode suddenly earns its place.
- Winter is a separate story. If you are running a room heater rather than an AC, that dries a room too, by warming air without adding any moisture to it. The comfort remedies further down apply equally.
- Higher floors and west-facing rooms feel it more. A room that takes heavy afternoon sun needs the AC running harder and longer, so more moisture is stripped out over an evening. How to keep some humidity in an air-conditioned room
Once the settings are sorted, these are the practical additions — described honestly, including the ones that do less than people hope.
- A room humidifier. The only option that adds a meaningful and controllable amount of moisture. If you use one, keep it clean and change the water daily rather than topping it up — standing water in any indoor container goes stale, and in Delhi it is also somewhere mosquitoes will breed, which our pest-proofing tips make the same point about. Follow the maker’s instructions on cleaning and on what water to use, because hard Delhi water leaves mineral deposits in some types.
- A bowl or two of water in the room. The cheap version. It does add a little moisture, but be realistic: it is a small effect compared with what the coil is removing. A wide, shallow bowl works better than a tall narrow one because the surface area is what matters. Change the water daily and do not leave it standing for weeks.
- Drying laundry in the room. Genuinely effective, essentially free, and something many Delhi households already do. A drying rack in an air-conditioned bedroom adds moisture steadily as the clothes dry.
- Air the room when the outdoor air allows. In the monsoon, a while with the windows open resets a very dry room quickly. Use judgement during smog season and on bad air days, when opening up brings in more than moisture — our air quality tips cover that trade-off.
- Houseplants. They release some moisture, and a few pots in a bedroom do something. Do not expect them to counteract an AC running all night, and keep an eye on the saucers underneath, which are classic mosquito sites.
- Run the AC for fewer hours. Cooling the room down before bed and letting a ceiling fan carry the rest of the night is the change that helps most and costs least.
When dryness is pointing at something else — and when to call
Most of the time this is normal behaviour you can tune with settings. A few patterns are worth having someone look at, and a few complaints that people blame on dryness turn out to be something else entirely.
- The unit is much larger than the room. An oversized AC cools the room fast, switches off, and repeats — short cycling. Comfort is uneven and moisture is removed in bursts. This is a sizing question, not a repair; the tonnage guide explains it.

- There is frost on the coil. An icing AC runs long and cold and does odd things to comfort. It is also the pattern to stop immediately — see an AC icing up.
