An air conditioner uses electricity mainly when the compressor is running. The fan draws very little. So the whole question of “why is my AC consuming so much” comes down to one thing: how many hours a day is the compressor actually on?
A healthy AC in a reasonable room reaches the temperature you set, the compressor stops, and it rests. An AC that is choked, undersized, set too low, or fighting an afternoon sun load never reaches the setpoint, so the compressor simply never stops. Same machine, same setting, far more units.

Check these yourself before you call anyone

- 1. Does the compressor ever stop? Go and listen at the outdoor unit at night, when the room should be comfortable. On a normal split AC the compressor should cut out once the room is cool and start again later. If it runs continuously for hours on end even at night, that is your finding, and everything below is about why.
- 2. Pull the filters out and hold them up to the light. If you cannot see light through the mesh, air cannot get through either. Rinse them, dry them fully and refit them. Our AC filter cleaning tips cover how often this is worth doing in Delhi.
- 3. Look at the outdoor coil. The fins on the outdoor unit should be visible metal, not a grey felt of dust. In this city they clog fast.
- 4. Check what temperature it is set to and who set it. A unit left at 18°C round the clock will run more or less permanently.
- 5. Ask what changed. New AC, new room, extra people at home, longer running hours, a window that lost its curtain, an old unit that was serviced last year and not this year. Consumption rarely jumps for no reason.
- 6. Compare like with like. A May bill against an April bill is not a fair comparison in Delhi — the machine genuinely works harder in a heatwave. Compare this May with last May before concluding something is broken.

Get free quotesThe commonest cause: dirty filters and a dust-caked outdoor coil
This is the answer most of the time in Delhi, and it is also the cheapest to fix.
An AC does not create cold. It moves heat out of the room and dumps it outside through the outdoor coil. Both ends of that transfer depend on air flowing freely over metal. Clog the indoor filter and less room air reaches the cold coil. Cake the outdoor fins in dust and the heat has nowhere to go. The machine still runs, it still cools a little, but it takes far longer to pull the room down — and the compressor is drawing full current for every one of those extra hours.
The result is an AC that looks like it is working. Nobody complains, because the room does eventually get cool. The only symptom is the bill.
- How to confirm it. Look at the filters and the outdoor fins. Grey, matted, or invisible metal means yes. Also feel the air coming off the outdoor unit — on a healthy unit it is noticeably hot, because that is the heat leaving your room.
- Delhi specifics. Construction dust, road dust and smog season put a load on outdoor coils here that manufacturers writing for milder climates never account for. A unit on a ground-floor balcony beside a road can choke in a single season.
- Is it DIY? Filters yes, wash them yourself. The coils are not — the indoor coil needs a proper jet wash with the electrics protected, and the outdoor coil needs pressure and the right foam. See our AC service guide for what that job involves.
The setting and the room: a low thermostat, sun load and an undersized AC
The second family of causes has nothing wrong with the machine at all. The AC is being asked to do more than it can, so it runs permanently.
- The thermostat is set very low. Every degree lower means the compressor runs longer before it can rest, and on a hot day a very low setting means it never rests at all. Setting it to a moderate temperature and letting the fan do the rest usually feels the same and costs much less. This is the single easiest change on this page.
- The unit is undersized for the room. A small unit in a large or west-facing room will cool it in October and lose to it in June. At 45°C the room gains heat as fast as the AC removes it, the setpoint is never reached, and the compressor runs from the moment you switch it on until the moment you switch it off. - Sun load and insulation. A top-floor flat with an uninsulated roof, a west wall that has been in the sun since two o’clock, or a large unshaded window changes the arithmetic completely. Heavy curtains, a reflective film on the worst window and keeping the door shut are free or nearly free and take real load off the machine.
- Air leaking out. A door left ajar, an open exhaust fan, or a gap around the pipe outlet in the wall means you are cooling the corridor. Seal the pipe outlet with putty and check the exhaust is off.

An ageing unit, and the fault that keeps the compressor running
If the unit is clean, correctly sized and sensibly set, and it still eats units, look at the machine itself.
- Age and general efficiency loss. An old AC does not fail suddenly, it fades. Bearings stiffen, the compressor loses some of its pumping efficiency, fins get bent and corroded, and insulation on the pipe run degrades. It still cools, but it takes more electricity to do it than it did when new. There is no single part to replace here. Beyond a certain age, a service restores some of it and replacement recovers the rest.
- A gradual refrigerant leak. A system slightly low on gas cools weakly, so it runs far longer to reach the setpoint, and consumption climbs before anyone notices the cooling has dropped. Frost on the copper pipe is the classic accompanying sign — see our page on an AC that is icing up. The fix is finding and repairing the leak, not just refilling.
- A stuck contactor. The contactor is the switch that feeds the compressor. If its contacts weld shut, the compressor keeps running even when the thermostat has told it to stop. The tell-tale is a room that gets colder than you asked for, sometimes uncomfortably so, while the outdoor unit never cuts out. This is a real and often-missed cause of a sudden consumption jump, and it is a technician’s job.
- A faulty temperature sensor. If the sensor misreads the room, the AC never believes it has reached the setpoint and keeps running. On an inverter unit this often shows up as an error code or a blink pattern — see a blinking AC light.
- A failing stabiliser or bad connection. A loose or corroded connection in the AC circuit wastes energy as heat and can make the unit draw badly. A warm plug top or a discoloured socket is a warning sign and an electrician’s job, not a DIY one.
When to call someone, and what to ask for
Start with a service before you start with a diagnosis. A proper clean of the filters, the indoor coil, the outdoor coil and the drain is the cheapest possible intervention and it fixes the commonest cause outright. If consumption is still high after a genuine deep clean, then it is worth paying for diagnosis.
- Tell them the pattern, not just the complaint. “The compressor never cuts out, even at two in the morning” is far more useful than “my bill is high”.
- Ask for the running current to be measured. A clamp meter reading on the outdoor unit, compared with the rating plate, is a real measurement and a competent technician can give you the number.
- Ask for the supply voltage too. Persistently low voltage makes a motor draw more current for the same work, and it is common on Delhi afternoons. Our voltage and stabiliser tips cover this.
- Ask whether the outdoor coil was actually cleaned or only the indoor filters. In this city that distinction is most of the job.
- Ask about the contactor and the sensor if the compressor is running non-stop. Both are far more likely than a compressor replacement.
- Do not accept a gas refill as a bill fix unless a leak has been located. Topping up a leaking system means paying for the same job again next summer.
Then there is the honest answer nobody sells: if the unit is very old, no repair will make it efficient again. Get it serviced, get it measured, and judge replacement on what it is costing you to run rather than on a technician’s recommendation alone.
