An MCB is a safety device. When it trips, it has done its job — something drew more current than the circuit is rated for, or a fault let current go where it should not. The trip is not the problem. The trip is the warning.
Which is why the worst thing you can do is what most people do: push the switch back up, again and again, until it holds. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping while an AC is running is how a warning becomes a burnt cable. One reset to confirm what you saw is fair. After the second trip, stop and diagnose.

When does it trip? That is the whole diagnosis
Note the timing before you do anything else, because it separates an electrical supply problem from a fault inside the AC.
- It trips the instant the compressor kicks in. An AC draws a large surge of current for a moment as the compressor starts. If the breaker cannot ride that surge, the likely causes are a weak or failing start capacitor, a compressor that is struggling to turn, an MCB of the wrong type or rating for an AC circuit, or supply voltage that has sagged so low that the motor pulls extra current to start.
- It runs fine for fifteen to thirty minutes, then trips. This is a heat and load story. Something is getting hotter and drawing more current as it runs — commonly a dirty condenser that stops the unit shedding heat, a failing compressor working too hard, or a loose connection heating up under load. Old ACs in dusty Delhi balconies do this every May.
- It trips randomly, whether the AC is running or not. Now suspect the circuit rather than the AC. A shared circuit that is also feeding a geyser, a microwave or an iron can be tipped over the edge by anything, and a genuinely faulty MCB will trip at random too.
- Only the RCCB or ELCB trips, not the MCB. That device watches for current leaking to earth, usually through damp or damaged insulation. It is a shock-protection device and it is telling you about a leakage fault, which is a professional job and not something to reset your way through.
Write down which of the four you have. It is the single most useful thing you can tell the person you eventually call.

All of these are done from outside the wiring — no covers off, no boards opened, nothing touched that carries current. If a check needs you to open anything electrical, it is not on this list, and that is deliberate.
- 1. Isolate the circuit. Switch off everything else on the same MCB, then run the AC alone. If it now holds, you have an overloaded shared circuit rather than a faulty AC. In many Delhi flats the bedroom AC shares a line with sockets that were never meant to carry it.
- 2. Look at the stabiliser. If the AC runs through a stabiliser, check whether the stabiliser itself is clicking repeatedly, buzzing loudly, running hot, or cutting out. A stabiliser at the end of its life will cause exactly this pattern, and it is an easy thing to test by borrowing a known-good one.
- 3. Note the time of day. If it only trips between two and six in the afternoon, when every AC in the colony is running, suspect voltage sag rather than a broken machine. If it trips equally at midnight, the supply is probably not the story.
- 4. Look at the outdoor unit while it starts. From a safe distance, does the fan spin up and does the compressor settle into a steady hum, or does it grunt, strain and trip? A compressor that struggles audibly on every start is a real clue.
- 5. Clean the filters and look at the outdoor coil. Free, and it genuinely matters for the “trips after twenty minutes” pattern. A choked unit runs hotter and draws more current the longer it runs.
- 6. Check whether it is only this AC. If two ACs on separate circuits both trip, the problem is upstream in the supply, not in either machine.
Why this happens so often in Delhi flats
Three local conditions do most of the damage, and none of them are the AC’s fault.
- Afternoon voltage sag. On a peak summer afternoon, with the whole colony’s load on the same transformer, the voltage at your socket can drop well below normal. A compressor asked to start on low voltage draws more current, not less, and that surge is what pushes the breaker over. This is why an AC can be perfectly healthy and still trip only at three in the afternoon.
- Wiring laid before ACs were normal. Plenty of older DDA flats, builder floors and pre-2000 colonies in Delhi were wired for fans, lights and a fridge. Air conditioners were added later on whatever socket was nearest. A thin cable on a long run gets warm under an AC load, the resistance rises, and the circuit protests. This is the single most common structural cause in older housing here.
- Shared circuits with the other big loads. A geyser, a microwave, an iron or a water motor on the same line as an AC will trip the breaker whenever two of them coincide. Nothing is broken; the circuit is simply being asked for more than it was designed to carry.
Dust plays its part too. A condenser caked in Delhi’s grey dust cannot dump heat, so the compressor runs hotter and pulls more current the longer the unit runs — which is exactly the twenty-minute trip pattern. Is it the AC or the wiring? Who should you call?
Calling the wrong trade wastes a visit, so use the pattern to decide.
- Call an AC technician if the trip is tied to the compressor starting, if the outdoor unit strains or hums without turning, if it trips only after the unit has been cooling for a while, or if the AC also cools poorly. Those point inside the machine — capacitor, compressor, fan motor, or on an inverter unit the control board.
- Call an electrician if the same MCB trips with the AC switched off, if other appliances on that circuit also trip it, if the RCCB is the one dropping, if the socket or plug top is discoloured or warm, or if you can smell anything hot near the board. - Call both, electrician first, if your flat is old, the AC was added to an existing socket, and the trip started in the first hot week of the season. Getting a dedicated, properly rated line for the AC often solves a problem that no amount of AC repair will.

How not to overpay — and what not to accept
Tripping is a fault that gets misdiagnosed a lot, because two trades can each blame the other. These habits keep you out of that loop.
- Describe the timing precisely. “It trips within two seconds of the outdoor unit starting” is worth more than an hour of guessing.
- Refuse a bigger MCB as the fix. If the answer offered is simply to fit a higher-rated breaker with no explanation of what was drawing the current, that is not a repair. It is the removal of a safety device.
- Ask what was measured. A competent technician checks the current the unit actually draws and the supply voltage, and can tell you both numbers. A verdict with no measurement behind it is a guess.
- Do not accept a gas refill for a tripping complaint. Refrigerant level is not what trips a breaker, and it is a common upsell attached to an unrelated symptom.

- Keep the old part. Ask for any replaced capacitor, relay or board back. It is a reasonable request and it keeps everyone honest.
