Start with the reassuring part, because it is true far more often than not. The interior light and the cooling system are two separate things. The light is a small lamp on a low-power circuit, switched by a button at the door frame. The cooling is a compressor, a fan and a sealed gas circuit that neither knows nor cares whether the lamp is lit.
So a fridge that is cooling normally with a dark interior has, nearly always, one of two small faults: the lamp has gone, or the switch that tells the fridge the door is open has stopped working. Neither one spoils food and neither is an emergency.
There is one exception, and it is the reason this page is worth reading rather than skimming. That same door switch is used by many fridges to decide when to stop the internal fan and when to run the cooling logic. If it sticks in the wrong position, the fridge can behave as though the door is permanently open — or permanently shut — and the cabinet can go warm. That is the one case where a dead light is a symptom of something bigger.

What to check yourself first, in order
Five minutes, no tools, no cost. The first four answer it in most homes.
- 1. Confirm the fridge has power at all. Is it still cooling? Is the display lit? Can you hear the compressor at some point over a few minutes? If everything is dead rather than just the light, that is a different problem and the socket, the plug, the fuse and the stabiliser come first.
- 2. Look at the lamp itself in good light. Take a torch. On an older fridge you will see a small bulb behind a clip-in plastic cover, usually at the top of the compartment. A blackened or visibly broken filament settles it. On a newer fridge you may instead see a long white LED strip or a flat panel at the top or up one side, with no removable bulb at all.
- 3. Press the door switch and watch. This is the ten-second test and it is the useful one. Find the small plunger button in the door frame — usually at the top edge, sometimes on the side pillar. With the door open the button is out and the light should be on. Press it in with a finger: the light should go out. Let it out: the light should come back. If pressing it changes nothing, either the lamp is dead or the switch is.
- 4. Check whether the switch moves freely. Press it a few times. It should click and spring back cleanly. A button that feels sticky, stays pressed in, or is packed with dried spill and kitchen grease is the fault. Wipe around it with a barely damp cloth and dry it, then try again.
- 5. Look for a light setting on the panel. A few models with a display let you dim or disable the interior lamp, and some enter a display or showroom mode that changes how the lights behave. If your panel has such a setting, check it before assuming hardware.
- 6. Check the other compartment. On a double-door fridge, does the freezer light work? Many models light only the fresh-food compartment, so a dark freezer may be normal. But if both have lamps and both are dead at once, suspect the supply to the lighting circuit rather than two bulbs failing on the same day.

These are two completely different repairs, and which one you have is decided by the age and design of the fridge, not by you. Look before you buy anything.
- A replaceable bulb. Older and simpler fridges use a small screw-in or push-in lamp behind a clip-off cover. It is a genuine home job, with two conditions: switch off at the socket and unplug first, and replace it with the same type and rating printed on the old bulb or on the lamp housing. Do not fit an ordinary room bulb because it happens to fit — fridge lamps are made to work in the cold and in a confined space. Let the old bulb cool before handling it, and do not force the cover, because cold plastic snaps.
- An LED strip or panel. Most fridges sold in recent years light the cabinet with a sealed LED module. There is no bulb to swap. The module is a part with its own small driver, it is model-specific, and getting to it means removing trim with wiring behind it. That is a technician job, not a DIY swap. An LED module that has failed usually goes completely dark, though some flicker or light only part of the strip first.
- The lamp holder or wiring. If a new bulb of the correct type still does not light and the switch tests fine, the holder itself, its contacts, or the wiring in the door pillar is the problem. Stop there and hand it over. Wiring inside a fridge cabinet is not a DIY repair, and this is not a job for testing with fingers or improvised probes.
One practical note for Delhi kitchens. Lamps and LED drivers do not enjoy a supply that swings, and a fridge on a line that surges regularly will lose small electronics before it loses its compressor. The door switch, and how to test it in ten seconds
The door switch is a plunger button that the closing door presses in. Out means the door is open, in means it is shut. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the fridge light goes off when you close the door even though you cannot see it happen.
The test. Open the door. The light should be on. Press the button in slowly with one finger while watching the lamp. It should go out at the point the button seats. Release it and the light should return immediately.
- Light on, does not go out when pressed. The switch is not making its contact, usually because it is worn, dirty or the plunger is not travelling far enough. If the fridge also has a door alarm, it may be sounding at the same time — see why your fridge is beeping.
- Light stays off no matter what the button does. The lamp or the lighting circuit, not the switch.
- Light flickers as you move the button. Dirty or worn contacts. Clean around the plunger and try again, but expect it to need replacing.
- The button is stuck in. Dried spill, kitchen grease or a broken spring. The fridge now believes the door is permanently shut, which is exactly the case covered in the next section.
- The button does not get pressed when the door closes. Look at how the door meets the frame. A door that no longer sits flat, because the gasket has hardened or the fridge is tilted, may miss the plunger. That is a seal problem wearing a lighting costume — see why your fridge door is not sealing.
Cleaning around a sticky plunger is a reasonable home job with the fridge unplugged. Replacing the switch is not, on most models, because it sits in the door pillar with the wiring loom behind it.
My fridge light is out but it is still cooling. Is that serious?
No, in almost every case. A cold fridge with a dark interior is a lighting fault, and lighting has nothing to do with cooling. Food is safe, nothing is quietly getting worse, and it is perfectly reasonable to live with it for a week until someone is passing. It is one of the least alarming things a fridge can do.
The one case where it matters more than it looks is a door switch stuck in the wrong position. Many fridges use that same switch for more than the lamp. It is often what stops the internal circulation fan when you open the door, and on some models it feeds the control logic that decides how hard to work after a door opening. So:
- A switch stuck as though the door is open can leave the fan stopped while the door is shut. Cold air stops circulating from the freezer side into the fresh-food compartment, so the fridge compartment goes warm while the freezer stays cold. - A switch stuck as though the door is shut leaves the lamp on inside a closed cabinet. A lamp that never goes out is a small heater sitting in an insulated box, and on an older fridge with a filament bulb it can warm the top of the compartment noticeably and make the compressor run longer than it should. The clue is a fridge that feels warm at the top shelf, or that never seems to switch off, plus a lamp housing that is hot when you open the door. LED lighting produces far less heat, but a stuck switch is still worth fixing.
- A dark fridge that is also warm. Do not assume the two are connected. Deal with the cooling first, because that is the one that costs you food, and mention the dead light when you book so the technician checks the switch while they are there.
So the short version: dark and cold is a small job. Dark and warm, or lit with the door closed, is worth a call.
When to call someone, and what to tell them
Call a technician when:
- The fridge has an LED strip or panel rather than a bulb. There is nothing to unscrew. The module is model-specific and sits behind trim with wiring underneath.
- A correct replacement bulb still does not light and the switch tests normally. That is the holder, the contacts or the wiring.
- The door switch is stuck, broken or not being pressed by the door, and cleaning around it has not helped.
- The light stays on with the door closed. You can check this by watching the lamp through the door gap as you close it, or by pressing the switch by hand. A lamp that never goes off is a heat source in a cold box.
- The fridge is dark and also cooling badly. Book it as a cooling problem and mention the light.
- Anything smells hot, looks scorched, or the lighting failed at the same moment as a trip or a surge. Switch off at the socket first.
What to tell them when you book, so they arrive with the right part:
- Brand and full model number from the sticker inside the door or on the rear of the cabinet.
- Whether the fridge has a removable bulb or a sealed LED strip or panel.
- What the door switch does when you press it by hand.
- Whether you have already tried a new bulb, and of what type.
- Whether cooling is normal, and whether the fridge compartment and freezer differ.
- Whether a door alarm is sounding as well.
Ask for the diagnosis before the quote, ask for the part and the labour as separate lines, never pay an advance, and pay directly once it is done.
