An MCB is a safety device. When it drops, it has done exactly what it was fitted to do — something drew more current than the circuit can carry, or current went somewhere it should not. The trip is not the fault. The trip is the warning about the fault.
A geyser is the appliance most likely to set that warning off, and there is a simple reason. It is the one machine in your home that holds several litres of water in a metal tank with a live heating element sitting inside it, in a small damp room. Water, heat and electricity in one box. If the earthing in your flat is weak, or the element has started to fail, the geyser is where you find out.
One reset to confirm what you saw is fair. After the second trip, stop. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps dropping is how a small leakage fault becomes a burnt cable or a shock in the bathroom. What to check first, before you call anyone
Every check below is free, and every one of them is done from outside the geyser. Nothing here asks you to open a cover, unscrew a panel or touch a wire. That is deliberate. A storage geyser is a sealed pressure vessel with a live element in it, and opening one is not a home job.
- 1. Note exactly when it trips. Within a second or two of switching on? After ten or twenty minutes of heating? Only when somebody opens a hot tap? Or at random even with the geyser off? Those four patterns point at four different faults, and this one observation is the most useful thing you can hand to the person you call.
- 2. Prove it is the geyser. Switch the geyser off at its wall switch and leave it off for a full day. If the MCB holds all day and only drops when the geyser goes on, the geyser is the source. If it still trips with the geyser off, the problem is in the circuit and you need an electrician, not a geyser man.
- 3. Look at which device actually dropped. Walk to the board and see. A single small switch is the MCB for that circuit. A wider device, usually marked RCCB or ELCB and often with a test button, is the leakage protector. Which one fell changes the whole diagnosis, and the next section explains why.
- 4. Look for water where it should not be. A damp patch on the wall behind or below the geyser, a drip running down the body, rust streaks, or water tracking towards the wall switch. In a small Delhi bathroom with no exhaust fan, months of steam with nowhere to go will also do it.
- 5. Check what else shares the circuit. In older DDA flats and builder floors, the bathroom geyser was often added to whatever line was nearest. If the trip happens only when the washing machine, the motor or an iron is also running, you have a loaded circuit rather than a broken geyser.
- 6. Think about the season. If this is the first cold morning you have used it since March, the geyser has sat full of hard water and unused for months. Faults that appear on that first switch-on are extremely common here and they are usually real, not a fluke.

These are the causes in rough order of how often they turn out to be the answer in Delhi NCR, not in order of how serious they are.
- A failed heating element leaking to earth. This is the commonest single cause, and hard water is why. The element is a metal tube with a heating wire sealed inside it. Delhi and Gurgaon water lays thick scale on that tube, the tube overheats under its own blanket of scale, and eventually the sheath cracks. Water then reaches the live wire inside and current escapes into the water and out through the earth. What you see is a trip within a second or two of switching on, usually the RCCB rather than the MCB. This is not repairable at home and it is not something to keep testing.
- Moisture where the electricity is. Steam in a small unventilated bathroom, a leaking inlet fitting dripping on to the connection, monsoon damp in an outside wall, or water that has got into the wall switch. Damp insulation leaks current to earth in exactly the same way a cracked element does. It is common in ground-floor flats and in bathrooms on an external wall.
- A weak or missing earth in the flat. Many older properties in Delhi have an earth connection that has corroded, come loose or was never properly made. Nothing announces this until an appliance with an element in water starts leaking a little current — and then the geyser gets blamed for revealing a problem that was always there. A proper electrician can test the earth. You cannot test it by feel, and you must not try.
- An undersized or shared circuit. A geyser is one of the biggest loads in a home. If it shares a line with a washing machine, a water motor or an iron, the breaker will drop whenever two of them coincide. The clue is that it only trips when something else is also running, and it never trips with the geyser alone.
- A tired MCB, switch or connection. Breakers do fail, usually by becoming over-sensitive with age. Wall switches and plug tops carrying geyser current for years get warm, then loose, then burnt. A discoloured or warm switch plate is a genuine finding and worth reporting.
Notice what is not on that list: nothing you can fix by adjusting a setting. A geyser that trips the breaker needs a fault found, not a knob turned.
Geyser trips the MCB when switched on, or after a few minutes?
The timing narrows it down more than anything else, so match your pattern to one of these.
- It trips instantly, every single time. This is a leakage or short-circuit story, not an overload. Something is connecting live to earth the moment power arrives — most often a cracked element sitting in water, sometimes a soaked connection. Instant and repeatable is the most reliable sign that the fault is inside the appliance.
- It heats for ten or twenty minutes, then trips. Heat is building somewhere it should not. A partly failed element can leak more as it gets hot, and a loose connection warms up under load until it lets go. It can also be a plain overload if other things are running at the same time.
- It only trips when a hot tap is opened. Water movement is doing something — often cold water hitting a hot damaged element, or a leak that only wets the fault when the tank refills. Treat it the same as an instant trip.
- It trips at odd times, including when the geyser is off. Then the geyser is probably innocent. Look at the circuit, at what else is on it, and at the breaker itself. Our guide on an MCB that keeps tripping in Delhi covers the circuit-side causes properly.
Write your pattern down in one plain sentence before anyone arrives. “It trips within two seconds of switching on, every time, and the wide switch with the test button is the one that falls” is worth more than an hour of somebody guessing in your bathroom.
Is it the MCB or the RCCB? They mean different things
These two devices sit next to each other in the same board and people call both of them “the MCB”, but they are watching for completely different things. With a geyser the difference matters a great deal.
- The MCB watches how much current the circuit is carrying. It drops on overload or a dead short. If only the MCB falls, think about load: what else is on that line, how old the wiring is, whether the geyser was added to a circuit never meant to carry it.
- The RCCB or ELCB watches for current going missing. It compares what goes out with what comes back, and if some current is escaping to earth it disconnects in a fraction of a second. That is a shock-protection device. When it trips, it is telling you that current is leaking out of the intended path — through wet insulation, through a cracked element, through the water.
- Which is why an RCCB trip on a geyser is the serious one. In a bathroom, that device is what stands between a leakage fault and the person standing barefoot on a wet floor. It has not malfunctioned. It has caught something. Our guide on an RCCB that keeps tripping explains how these are traced.
If someone offers to isolate the leakage protector so you can get through the winter, that is the moment to end the conversation and find someone else.
When to call someone, and what to tell them
Call once you have the pattern. Do not wait for it to settle down, and do not keep the geyser in service while you decide — heat water in a kettle or a bucket rod for a few days if you must.
- Call immediately, and leave the circuit switched off, if anyone has felt a tingle from a tap or the geyser body, if the RCCB is the device dropping, if there is any burning smell, or if a switch or socket is warm or discoloured. These are not wait-and-see symptoms.
- Call an electrician first if the trip happens with the geyser switched off, if other appliances trip the same breaker, or if you suspect the flat’s earthing. The earth has to be tested with an instrument, and that is their job.
- Call a geyser technician or plumber first if it trips only when the geyser is switched on, instantly and repeatably. That points inside the tank — almost always the element, sometimes the thermostat.
- What to say when you call. The geyser type and rough age, storage or instant, gas or electric, which device trips, how many seconds after switching on, whether it trips with the geyser off, whether there is any visible water or rust, and whether the bathroom has an exhaust fan. Six sentences saves a wasted visit and a return trip for a part.
Two things to expect. First, if the element has failed, replacing it means draining the tank and opening a pressure vessel — a job with the water off, the power off and the correct gasket, done by someone who does it regularly. It is genuinely not a DIY task, no matter how many videos suggest otherwise.
