A working RO is not silent. A small booster pump runs while the unit is filling, water moves through narrow tubes, and a valve clicks when the tank fills or the flush cycle starts. Most people stop hearing it after a week.
Which is why a change matters. When the machine gets louder, starts banging, gurgles, or runs when it used to be quiet, something in the water path or the pump has changed. Noise arrives well before a fault becomes visible in the water, so it is worth paying attention to.
Delhi adds two specific causes to the usual list. Supply that runs only a few hours a day means the inlet line empties regularly, and air in an empty line is one of the loudest things an RO can do. And hard water scales the pump and valve internals over time, which changes the sound the unit makes as it ages.

What an RO normally sounds like
Before deciding something is wrong, know what right sounds like. A typical unit does the following, and none of it is a fault.
- A steady hum or buzz while filling. That is the booster pump. It should start when the tank needs water and stop when the tank is full.
- A click when it starts and stops. The inlet solenoid valve opening and closing. One clear click at each end of a cycle is normal.
- A trickle to the drain while it is producing. Reject water going down the drain line is how the process works — see RO reject water explained.
- A short flush at the start of a cycle on units with an auto-flush feature. Slightly louder for a few seconds, then back to normal.
The useful habit is to listen once deliberately, when the machine is behaving, and remember the pattern. Almost every fault below is a departure from it.

A pump that has gone from a hum to a growl, a rattle or a whine is the most common noise complaint. Work through these before agreeing to a pump replacement, which is one of the pricier parts.
- The pump is running dry or starved. If the inlet tap is half closed, the supply has stopped, or the pre-filter is choked, the pump strains against no water and gets much louder. In Delhi this is the single commonest cause, because supply schedules mean the line genuinely empties. Check the inlet tap is fully open and that water is actually available right now.
- Choked pre-filters. Heavy sediment from tanker and borewell supply blocks the sediment cartridge far faster than manufacturer schedules assume, and a starved pump is noisy. Our filter change guide covers the real intervals.
- The unit is vibrating against something. A pump mounted on a loose bracket, a machine touching a wall or a cabinet panel, or rubber mounting bushes that have hardened will transmit ordinary vibration into the wall and make it sound alarming. Try easing the unit a centimetre away from what it touches and see if the noise drops.
- Scale or wear inside the pump. After years on hard NCR water, pump internals scale up and bearings wear. This is a genuine replacement, but it should be the conclusion after the three checks above, not the opening quote.
Banging or knocking in the pipes when the RO starts or stops
A thump or a bang in the pipework the moment the purifier switches on or off is water hammer. The moving column of water is being stopped suddenly by a valve, and the shock travels through the pipe.
- What causes it. A fast-closing solenoid valve, high supply pressure, and long unsupported pipe runs together produce the classic bang. It often appears after a building pump is upgraded or after the supply pressure changes.
- Loose pipe clips are half the noise. A pipe that is properly clipped to the wall thumps far less than one that can move. This is often the cheapest real fix.
- Partially closing the inlet tap to the RO reduces the shock, at the cost of slower filling. Worth trying as a diagnostic before anyone is called.
- An arrestor or a cushioning device fitted at the inlet is the proper remedy where the hammer is severe. That is a plumber’s job, not a purifier technician’s.
Water hammer is worth attending to rather than tolerating, because repeated shock loosens joints elsewhere in the run — the leak turns up somewhere you were not expecting.
Gurgling, sputtering or spitting at the tap
Air in the system. The tap coughs, water comes in bursts, and the machine sounds like it is swallowing. This is common in Delhi and usually harmless in itself.
- After a supply cut. When the line empties and refills, air gets in. It usually clears itself after the tank has been drawn down and refilled a couple of times. Drain the purifier tank fully, let it refill, and see whether the sputtering has stopped.
- Right after a filter change. New cartridges bring trapped air with them. Sputtering for the first day after a service is expected and not a sign the job was done badly.
- A leaking or loose fitting on the suction side can pull air in continuously. If the gurgling never clears, look for a damp fitting or a tube that has been pushed only partly home.
- A storage tank that has lost its air charge gives weak, spitting flow at the tap even when the tank has water in it. A technician can check and restore it.
Air that clears on its own is a non-event. Air that comes back every day means there is a path for it to get in, and that path is worth finding.
The RO keeps running and never goes quiet
This is the noise complaint that costs you money while you ignore it, because a machine that never switches off is producing and draining continuously.
- The float or shut-off valve is not closing. The float tells the system the tank is full. When it sticks, the unit keeps making water with nowhere to put it, so the pump runs on and the drain runs on. It is a small, inexpensive part and it is the usual cause.
- Short cycling — on, off, on, off. Repeated clicking every few minutes usually points at a pressure switch or a tank that has lost its air charge, so the system thinks it needs to top up constantly.
- A leak downstream. If treated water is escaping somewhere, the tank never stays full and the machine keeps replacing it. Look for damp under the sink and around the fittings.
- Low inlet pressure. A unit that can never fill the tank because the supply is weak will run far longer than it should. Our RO not filling the tank guide covers this in detail.
If it will not stop and you cannot get it looked at immediately, switch the unit off at the socket and close its inlet tap between uses. That stops the water loss while you wait.
