This page is for one symptom only: the purifier is alive and doing something, but the storage tank never fills or takes far longer than it used to. A tank fill is a chain of four things. Water has to arrive at the inlet with enough pressure. It has to get through the pre-filters. The pump has to push it through the membrane. And the treated water has to reach a tank that is able to accept it and hold it. Break any link and the tank stays empty — but the symptom looks identical from the outside, which is why this fault gets misdiagnosed as a membrane so often.
In Delhi NCR the first two links fail far more often than the last two. Supply runs for a few hours a day, gravity feed from a rooftop tank gives modest pressure, and the sediment load chokes pre-filters much faster than the manufacturer’s schedule assumes.

First, do the timed fill test
Guessing at “slow” leads nowhere. Ten minutes with a jug turns it into a number that you and any technician can argue about honestly.
- Empty the tank. Draw off treated water until the tap runs dry, so the machine begins a full production cycle.
- Note the time and let it run for exactly fifteen minutes, undisturbed.
- Measure what it produced. Draw the treated water into a measured jug. Note that figure and the date.
- Measure the drain flow in the same period if you can — put the drain tube into a bucket. A machine producing almost nothing while draining normally is starved, not broken at the membrane.
- Compare against a fresh set of pre-filters. Do the same test right after the next filter change. That is how you find out whether the filters were the problem.
Also note whether the pump is running at all during those fifteen minutes. Pump running with no output, and pump not running at all, are two completely different faults.

Start here, because it is free and because in Delhi it is genuinely the most frequent answer. An RO cannot make water it is not being given.
- Is the inlet tap fully open? Not half open. A tap that got nudged during cleaning under the sink is a classic. Trace the thin inlet tube back from the machine to the tap that feeds it.
- Is supply available right now? If the building runs on a schedule, or the overhead tank has emptied because the pump did not run, your purifier is simply waiting. Check a normal kitchen tap.
- Is the pressure enough? Many units need a minimum inlet pressure, and some have a low-pressure switch that stops the pump to protect it. Low floors, gravity feed from a roof tank and general building weakness all bite here — see low water pressure in Delhi. If your tap flow is weak everywhere at that hour, that is the answer.
- Is the inlet screen or valve blocked? There is usually a small mesh strainer at the inlet connection. Silt collects on it, and clearing it is a two-minute job for a technician.
- Is the tank supplying it clean? If your overhead tank has a heavy sediment layer, everything downstream chokes faster. Our tank cleaning guide covers it.
Choked pre-filters and a struggling pump
If supply and pressure are fine, the next two links are the ones that fail. Between them they account for most genuine slow-fill faults in NCR homes.
- Choked sediment or carbon pre-filter (the usual answer). These cartridges sit in front of the membrane to catch silt. On tanker and borewell supply they load up fast, and a blocked one starves everything downstream. The tell-tale is a pump that runs and runs while producing very little. - A weak or failing booster pump. A pump that has lost pressure will fill a tank very slowly rather than not at all. It is a real replacement part, but it should be confirmed by measurement after fresh pre-filters, because a choked filter mimics a weak pump exactly.
- A dead adaptor on a partly working unit. If the pump never runs at all, look at power and the plug-in adaptor before anything internal. Delhi’s voltage swings are hard on these.
- A fouled or scaled membrane. A membrane at the end of its life passes less water for the same pressure, so the tank fills slowly. This is a real cause — but it is fourth on the list, not first, and it should only be concluded after fresh pre-filters and a measured pressure. See membrane replacement for what that involves.
When the problem is the tank itself, not the water
Sometimes the machine is producing fine and the tank simply is not holding what it is given. The symptom feels the same at the tap.
- The tank has lost its air charge. A pressurised storage tank uses air on one side of an internal bladder to push water out. If that air has leaked away, the tank holds less usable water and the tap flow is weak even when the machine has been running. A technician can check and restore the charge; this is a common and inexpensive finding.
- The float or shut-off is cutting off too early. If the float valve trips before the tank is really full, the machine stops producing and you get a small amount of water each time. The opposite failure — never cutting off — is covered in our RO noise guide.
- A leak between the tank and the tap. Treated water escaping from a fitting means the tank never stays full. Look for damp under the sink and around every push-fit connector.
- A blocked or kinked outlet tube. Tubes get crushed when a unit is pushed back against a wall or moved during cleaning. Follow every tube by hand looking for a sharp bend.
- A cracked tank. Uncommon, but it happens. Get it confirmed as the tank and not a fitting on the tank before anything is replaced.
Why this gets worse in a Delhi summer
Slow-fill complaints spike from April to July every year, and it is usually a combination rather than a single failure.
- You are drawing more water. The same production rate now empties the tank faster because the household is drinking more, so the machine can never get ahead.
- Supply is tighter. Shorter supply hours and more tanker deliveries mean less time in the day when the unit has water at good pressure to work with.
- Tanker water is siltier. More sediment reaching the pre-filters means they choke sooner. A filter set that lasted through winter may not last a summer.
- Everyone else is drawing too. Building pressure is lowest at the hours you most want water, which is exactly when the low-pressure cut-off is most likely to stop the pump.
The practical response is to fill the tank when supply and pressure are best, usually early morning, and to change pre-filters more often through summer than the calendar says.
