General pest control is a spray. It works on crawling insects because they walk across treated surfaces and absorb the chemical. A rat does not. Rodent control is a completely different discipline built on three things: baiting in the places they actually travel, trapping where bait is unsafe, and proofing — physically closing the gaps they are coming through.
Of those three, proofing is the one that decides whether you are doing this again in two months. It is also the one most often left out of a cheap quote.

Killing the rats currently in your flat is the easy half. If the route they used is still open, the flat simply refills — and in a Delhi apartment block there is always another rat.
- A mouse needs a gap the width of a pencil; a rat needs about an inch. That is far smaller than people assume, and it is why "there is no way in" is almost always wrong.
- The usual routes are the gap where the drainpipe or waste pipe passes through the wall, the space behind and under kitchen cabinets, the AC copper-pipe core hole, the exhaust fan opening, and the gap under a badly fitted door.
- Proofing is physical. Steel wool packed into gaps and sealed, mesh over vents and drain openings, a brush strip or sweep on the door. Rats gnaw through foam and plastic; they do not get through steel wool and cement.
- Ask explicitly whether proofing is in the quote. A price that covers only bait placement is a price for temporary relief.
Bait safety with children and pets — and the smell problem
Two practical issues come up on almost every rodent job, and both are worth raising before the technician arrives rather than after.
- Bait placement. Rodenticide must go where rodents travel and children and pets cannot reach — inside tamper-resistant stations, behind appliances, in service ducts. Say up front if you have small children, a dog or a cat. A professional will place accordingly or switch to trapping.
- The smell. This is the one nobody warns you about. A rodent that eats bait may die inside a wall cavity or under a cabinet, and the smell lasts days to a couple of weeks. It is unpleasant and there is often no way to reach the body. If that is unacceptable — a small flat, an infant at home — ask for trapping instead of baiting, so that what is caught can be removed.
- Never place your own bait alongside a professional treatment. It competes with theirs and makes the job take longer.
- Secondary poisoning is a real consideration if there are cats in the building. Worth mentioning; a professional can choose products with that in mind.
When it is the building, not your flat
In a Delhi apartment block, rodents live in the shared spaces — service shafts, the basement, the garbage area, the drain runs — and visit individual flats. Treating one flat in that situation is holding back water with your hands.
- Signs it is a building problem: neighbours have it too, the activity is worst near the kitchen waste stack, or it returns within weeks of every treatment.
- What actually works is a coordinated treatment through the RWA or society, covering the shared areas and the garbage handling at the same time.
- What you can still do individually is proof your own flat properly. It will not empty the building, but it does keep them out of your kitchen.
- An AMC makes more sense here than for almost any other pest, precisely because the source is outside your control.
